Netbackup SAN transport for VMWare

Hello!
I have media server and setup vmware backups and all works over LAN.
Now I'm trying to configure Netbackup for VMware backup over SAN.

I'm have:
- NB Master Server - snb2 (Windows 2008 R2)
- NB Media Server - svs2 (virtual machine) VMWare vcenter (Windows 2008 R2)
- ESX VMware - svm8
- Datastore, which stores clients VM - LUN214
- Master, Media, ESX - they are in the same VLAN and have access to each other

I want to make backups using vcenter.

I'm configured:
- In vcenter - Automount disable, Automount scrub
- Configure zoning on SAN switch --> zone include media server (Vcenter), tape drive, ESX, datastore LUN214
- LUN shows up as online under disk management
- Changed the VMWARE policy to only use SAN as backup method. NBD works fine.

When I launch the job, a snapshot is created (as seen in vcenter) but, when the actual backp stream starts, I get this error:
Error opening the snapshot disks using given transport mode: Status 23.
What should I do?

Hi,

Sorry I missed this point "- NB Media Server - svs2 (virtual machine) VMWare vcenter (Windows 2008 R2)"

You cannot use SAN Transport when your backup host is virtual. Only hotadd.

Suggest you zone the vmfs datastores with your master, then try san transport.

I forgot to specify that version Netbackup 7.6.1 and VMWare 5.5

Its trying to use hotadd as the transport. Select SAN from your policy, and remove the rest.

Tell me please
I can not back up through the SAN, even if the virtual media server HBA card is presented?

Hi,

I don't think that is supported from VMWare side. PLease see the note from Vmware.

https://pubs.vmware.com/vsphere-50/index.jsp?topic=%2Fcom.vmware.vddk.pg.doc_50%2FvddkDataStruct.5.5.html

In this mode, the virtual disk library obtains information from an ESX/ESXi host about the layout of...LUNs, and using this information, reads data directly from the SAN or iSCSI LUN where a virtual disk resides. This is the fastest transport method for applications deployed on a SAN-connected ESX/ESXi host.
SAN mode requires applications to run on a physical machine (a backup server, for example) with acce...FibreChannel or iSCSI SAN containing the virtual disks to be accessed. This is an efficient data path, as shown in SAN Transport Mode for Virtual Disk, because no data needs to be transferred through the production ESX/ESXi host. If the backup server is also a media server, with optical media or tape drives, backups can be made entirely LAN-free.

Then from the logs.
