The image data base contains files that conatin information about 'what' is backed up (a list of files effectively) and where they are backed up (on which media), and by which media server.  It also holds information about when the images will expire.

This lives in ...

/usr/openv/netbackup/db/images

This information is updated for example when :

A backup or duplication is run

Images are expired

http://www.symantec.com/docs/HOWTO34454

the volume database contains the following information about a media (tape)

media ID:              R0TP02
media type:            4MM cartridge tape (9)
barcode:               --------
media description:     Added by Media Manager
volume pool:           DataStore (2)
robot type:            TL4 - Tape Library 4MM (7)
robot number:          0
robot slot:            3
robot control host:    womble
volume group:          000_00000_TL4
vault name:            ---
vault sent date:       ---
vault return date:     ---
vault slot:            ---
vault session id:      ---
vault container id:    -
created:               Mon Mar 19 11:24:18 2012
assigned:              ---
last mounted:          ---
first mount:           ---
expiration date:       ---
number of mounts:      0
max mounts allowed:    ---

It is updated when vault operations occur, when tapes are assigned for backup , expire, or are deleted or added to NBU.  An inventory will also update this info if the tapes have moved slots withing a library, or are ejected.
This information is help in the NBU EMM database.

Martin

Different parts of NBU catalogs and databases are described and explained in NBU Admin Guide I http://www.symantec.com/docs/DOC3650

Chapter 18 has the following sections:

■ About NetBackup catalogs
■ Parts of the NetBackup catalog

Please note that from NetBackup 7.5 image metadata will now be held in the EMM database, which will provide performance improvements on scheduling, expiration and restoration.

Only part of the image catalog will be in EMM, the 'Image header files' - the corresponding .f file will be in the same location.

Indeed, adding the files file to the EMM database would not provide any improvement as these are data files.
