Hi,

We are planing to install Netbackup 7.7.2 and EMC Data Domain ( "OS: 5.6.0.3-485123Model: DD2500" ).

My query is that can we use Netbackup virtually

OR

We required physical server ?

Considering the performance of backup.

If you can allocate sufficient resources to guarantee same performance as physical, then your media servers can be virtual. Please read up about about resource requirements - NBU 7.7 needs more memory and cpu than previous versions. Also ensure that you have 10Gig network connectivity with DD.

It is compulsory to have 10Gig network connectivity with DD.

I use data domain and find it works very well.

Of course, I am stuck with Fiber Channel due to old architechture standards, and VTL as well. Even so, they work well. I have several hundred drives defined on each one, so I can send my back ups there as fast as I can, and then I duplicate to tape using SLP.

There are a couple of things to watch out for - there is overhead on cleanup, and you need to plan for expiring and deleting the old images to free the space back up.

My processes are tape based since I am using VTL, which I do not recommend.

NetBackup 9.1.0.1 on Solaris 11, writing to Data Domain 9800 7.7.4.0
duplicating via SLP to LTO5 & LTO8 in SL8500 via ACSLS
