Netbackup excludes '/tmp' directory from VMWare(policy/type) backups

Hello All,

We have VmWare policies configured to backup Linux guest running on ESXi hosts. The backup completes successfully and I can browse and restore individual files/folders, restore entire VM, etc.

However, I cannot see anything under the '/tmp' directory in the backup image even though the '/tmp' dir is configured as an 'ext4' filesystem. All other files/directories are visible except the '/tmp' directory.

Can someone please help me figure out why Netbackup excludes the '/tmp' directory even though its backing up the entire .vmdk

Hello,

google "netbackup in virtual environments" for a .pdf and review file-level recovery support notes in this document. Most likely your combination of NetBackup and ext4 bit version does not support file-level recovery.

My guess is that the same will apply for VMware:

https://www.veritas.com/support/en_US/article.TECH52350

NetBackup automatically excludes the following file system types on most platforms:

  • ......
  • tmpfs (Linux)
  • ....
  • .....

Hopefully others will confirm.
