Netbackup for VMware requirement

jalite275

To implement netbackup for vmware, it seems needing a Windows server as a backup server (proxy) which will need to able to access the VMware datastore. Can this server be a VM, or vCenter itself?

Thanks

Apart from Windows , the backup host can be the following as well.

Windows Server 2003 (32 and 64 bit)
Windows Server 2003 R2 (32 and 64 bit)
Windows Server 2008 (32 and 64 bit)
Windows Server 2008 R2 (64 bit)

RHEL 5.5 (64bit) (Requires NetBackup 7.5.0.5 or later.)
RHEL 6.3 (64bit)

SUSE 10 SP4 (Requires NetBackup 7.5.0.3 or later.)
SUSE 11 (64bit) SP1 and SP2

Check for "Support for NetBackup 7.x in virtual environments" pdf for this list.

Yes,as NBU supports hotadd mode, a VM can be a backup host as well. Check the "Notes on the hotadd transport mode" in the NetBackup Vmware admin guide for some limitations like less that 1 TB Vmdk etc.
There is no mention if vCenter cant be used as backup host, there should be no issue as NetBackup and vCenter appl use differnt TCP ports and there is no conflict(by default)
