Netbackup primary secondary master server configuration

Hello all,

We have a Netbackup 8.0 running on Master - media server configuration. Netbackup runs on master server that is a virtual machine.

we had a crash on the operating system which was running netbackup 8.0 on the master server.

since we did not have redundancy, we had to do a catalog recovery on a new server albeit with the same name as before.

This led to us losing a days worth of backups due to the nature of the catalog recovery.

I am since thinking of getting some kind of redundancy built in the existing environment for master server config.

Is it possible to do a primary - secondary master server config , that is add a secondary master server which will be a "slave" to the existing primary master server and take over incase of a OS level crash o nthe promary?

I have checked a clustered master server configuration , and my understanding is that this uses the existing clustering technology ( Windows clustering etc) to form a clustered master server pair. But the documentation says it does not support the clustering of an existing master server. Moreover, We are trying to protect the server from an OS level crash and bring it back in the fastest possible manner.

Also, What I was thinking of doing in the interim is to install netbackup on another server and use it to backup the existing master server VM.

That would create the following situation, the existing master server VM sits on a hyper V cluster that is getting backed up by the existing netbackup master server ( hope this is not too confusing!) . So What I would also like to know is.. Is it possible to have 2 master servers backing up the same client at different times!

please let me know if there are any clarifications required, any help will be much appreciated!

Hello,

For the standalone server, the catalog recovery is an option to bring back the Master server.

If you want to use the Cluster technology then you have to migrate the current master server to cluster which need to involve Consultant.

You cannot use two Master server to backup clients at the same time and it's not advisable. You are wasting your resources and time to manage to Master server.

The best solution for you is AIR (replication). Please go through the below mentioned Video & article.

Thanks Tousif, We decided to go with HyperV replication
