Dear Veritas Community.
We are planning to get rid of Avamar backup and use Netbackup 8 for our future software, but regarding this I have a question that I'm pretty sure someone of you can deliver to me that or those answers:
So those are my questions:
Thanks a lot,
It's a maybe difficult one, but I'm sure you pros out there can help me out on building my POC.

If you have a remote sites and they need to run when the link is down you are going to need a master server at each site with its own media server. In gneral I belive if it is beyond a campus network, you most likely want a master server at all the remote sites.
We do exactly this with netbackup apliances acting as master/media servers at remote sites. Then we use AIR to move the data offsite. Note, AIR is only applicable for disk based (MSDP) backups.
If the site is small you should look into the virtual appliance.
If you are worreid about HA at site, then look at two media servers, and maybe use a virtual appliance for the master so you easily move it to another host if need be. Personally, I try to keep HA out of the backup environment because of cost and complexity. Most (but not all) environments can tolorate a rare unplanned outage in the backup enivironment.
VMWare backups can do file level recovery. Look at the compatibily documetation. The OS and the filesysem must be supported. People often overlook the filesystem support and get in trouble.
Finally agents exist for things like datbases, exchange, sharepiont. Again read the documentation on revs and support.
For something this large, I stronly suggest Veritas or your reseller should be helping you size and architect your initial implimentaion. As you are swapping out a competative product, I expect you can get a lot of help with this. :)

Hi, thanks a lot for the consideration, also the hint to get in touch with Veritas, we will definitively do that, also for our POC.
Thanks again.

Before starting an argue with "fan boys" - Notice that this is just my opinion !
Design it not the only perspective you should have in consideration. The "administrative part" of the environment should be important as well. And going from Avamar to NetBackup it's like going from Windows 2008 to 2000; you should at least try to get a POC from other vendors as well (Networker 8.x or CommVault 11.x).
I know that some of them might be expensive but if I would make a list of good things vs bad things in Netbackup and lack of innovation or so called "wheel invention" that NetBackup tried, the bad list will be at least 10 times longer.

Hi, considering that Avamar has not really moved the last years (just present to 7.4) and there are huge problems with infrastructure run as ours. The only decission was to get away from it. The Administrativ work with Avamar is like a 100% Job for daily checks and resolution.
We are testing 4 Products, Veeam, Netbackup, CommVault and Baracuda. However Veeam is to expensive due to (Not TB frontend price possibility) CommVault is great, we are looking in to it, Baracuda (Total fail, you don't have a local GUI, only on thei'r cloud) for a governament useless.
Now Netbackup by Veritas, why is this product till now the best?
Usability, very easy setup no engineer was needed, I could just do it by myself folling easy steps. I have even an AIR Policy active and it works great. And for us one of the key features, you don't need hunderts of Proxy servers! This was a total mess with Avamar, we have 22 vCenters and a Total of over 1000 Hosts, so imagine the amount of installations only for the proxies (and configuration).
I can here with NBU just select to install NBU Media Server on several servers from the local master server and it's done in a very quick time.
I'm not fan or even married with Veritas or such... I'm for the cheapest best working solution.
Right now, CommVault and Veritas are on the run, after our tests, (At the Governament) we run a 30 Page testzenarios we will then know which one won, and who will get the contract.
