Netbackups Backup running very slow rate.

Hi Guyz

I have a netbackup 7.7.3 running in my organization with Dell Tape Library with two drives. Whenever my monthly VMs backups are running it gets very much time to complete, and my backups taking 2 days or more to complete.

1 drive is using tape for daily backups.

2nd drive is using tape for Monthly backups.

Please guide me how I take my backup fast. and how to tunning the backup performance.

Your kind response is appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

ZIS

What values are in your current SIZE_DATA_BUFFERS and NUMBER_DATA_BUFFERS files?

I am curious about how you manage to do this and WHY :

1 drive is using tape for daily backups.

2nd drive is using tape for Monthly backups.

Normally daily and monthly will not run at the same time and both drives should be used to perform daily backups and boths drives for monthly.

There is nothing quick about performance tuning.
Let us start with basics:
How is your Storage Unit Configured?
Single STU set to use 2 drives concurrently?
What is MPX set to?

What is Max Jobs per Client set to?

Tell us about your VMware backups -

Which transport method are you using?

Are you using VMware Intelligent Policies?
If so, have you configured resource limits?

Some reading matter:

NetBackup Backup Planning and Performance Tuning Guide (not updated for 7.7)

Also check the speed of VMkernel port(s) they maybe set to something slower than the VM data ports.  People tend to forget the VMware API backup traffic does not use the same ports as the regular data.

Dear Marianne

There is nothing quick about performance tuning.

Let us start with basics:

How is your Storage Unit Configured? I have configured MSDP Pool

Single STU set to use 2 drives concurrently?I don't know how to set single STU to use 2 drives or 1 drive. Please help

What is MPX set to? where is MPX and how can i set or configure. Help is needed

What is Max Jobs per Client set to?  2

Tell us about your VMware backups - Which transport method are you using?Transport mode is nbd. Please check Attached file for transport mode for further understanding.

Are you using VMware Intelligent Policies? If so, have you configured resource limits? no I am not using VMWare intelligent policy

Thanks for your response. Please help me to tune out my Netbackup performance.

Regards

Zuhaib

So, your story has completely changed now.

Have a look at your opening post:

I have a netbackup 7.7.3 running in my organization with Dell Tape Library with two drives. Whenever my monthly VMs backups are running it gets very much time to complete, and my backups taking 2 days or more to complete.

1 drive is using tape for daily backups.

2nd drive is using tape for Monthly backups.

Please show us your Storage Unit Config.
From command line will best, or you can take screenshots.
If you have more than one, open each one so that we can see config parameters in screenshots.
From cmd (assuming that you are on Windows):
cd to <install-path>\netbackup\bin\admincmd and run this command:
bpstulist -U
Copy the text output (not screenshot please) and post here.

Please show us VMware policy config.
From cmd, in same folder as above:
bppllist <policy-name> -U
Copy the text output and post here.

I have posted performance tuning doc and VMware best practice guide 4 weeks ago.
Have you actually read any of that?

You really need to read up about VMware Intelligent Policies.
If you are using this method, you can configure Resource Limits.
Too many simultaneous backups from one datastore is the biggest reason for slow performance.
