Omitting CLIENT from bp.conf file - good idea?

Anybody tried that and and had any issues?

We automate software installations and configurations.  To save time we are thinking about using the same bp.conf as much as possible.   According to the manual CLIENT name is not manditory in the bp.conf file, if absent the client software will get the name from a gethostname system call.  Tried that and all seems to be OK with standard backups and restores.   My concern is with application agent backups like Oracle RMAN.

My understanding has always been that CLIENT_NAME is needed for any client-initiated job. Such as rman.

You may want to test a client-initiated bplist or bprestore from one of your test clients. Be sure that you have bprd log on the master server to track master's client name interpretation.
