Oracle cross restore failing.

Hi guys, I am needing some help here with an oracle cross restore.

My environment is like this:

Location 1:
Master server
Tape Library

Data Domain

Location 2:

media server

tape library

data domain.

Oracle server is in location 1, so I grabed the tapes, and took them to location 2.

what I have done so far is the following:

- In altnames I created a file named as the destination server, with the name of the origin server inside.

- in the master server config, under general server placed the original backup server as the master, and the restore server as the media.

- Changed the media owner of the tapes from the master to the media.

After all this, when the restore starts, it tries to find the tape in the master server instead of the media.

What could it be that I am not seeing?

thanks in advance.

Seems this is the issue: Found D:\GEAplications\Veritas\Netbackup\db\config\USE_BACKUP_MEDIA_SERVER_FOR_RESTORE; I think you will need to temporarily remove/rename this file for 'media server override' (FORCE_RESTORE...) to work.

Is Oracle backup from location 1 also available in location 2 ?

If that is the case, you can simply promote the backup from location 2 to primary copy.

Do you have bprd log folder on the master server?

If not, please create the folder and restart NBU, followed by retry of the restore.

bprd log will tell us why the master server is used as restore media server and not the media server.

Nicolai, I moved the tapes so I don´t have to set the copy as primary coz it´s the only copy.

Marianne, I just tried doing the restore again and logged the results, you can see them in the attachment.

Originating server is :cfhq002so0232

destination server: ar-gecs21

Master; myarsw00403bk01

I took a look at the logs but couldn´t figure anything from it.

thanks.

I think by default, Netbackup will use the server that wrote the backup to restore the backup. This is why we have to use "FORCE_RESTORE_MEDIA_SERVER" bp.conf entries with regular backups when we want them restored by another media server in the same NBU environment. I dont think that entry will work for an Oracle restore, what I would try is to reassign the images on that tape to be owned by the media server in Loc2.

This command should do it:

/usr/openv/netbackup/bin/admincmd/bpmedia -movedb -oldserver ******  -newserver ****** -m <tapeid>

EDIT: I just saw that you might have done this already. If possible please post the bpimagelist -l output for the image you're restoring, and the nbemmcmd -listmedia -media <tapeid> output for one of the tapes.

Will give it a shot.

You know I had to add that out of the blue recently since it was not able to do AD granular restores, it worked one day, the started failing.

Found a post here from a guy that had the same problem, added that line and started working.

I have learned the value of bprd log to troubleshoot restores early in my 'NBU life'.

Shortly after "restorefiles" entries in the log, you will see "find_files" entries.

"find_files: Got CONTINUE from bpdbm " signals the end of bpdbm comms where backup media server is found.
At this point the restore media server is selected.
This is where I expect to see "FORCE_RESTORE_MEDIA_SERVER" entry.
Or 'something else' that will indicate why the FORCE_RESTORE entry is not used.

I had obviously no idea that you had USE_BACKUP_MEDIA_SERVER_FOR_RESTORE touch file in place until I saw the entry in the bprd log.

This touch file is extremely useful when there are multiple OST appliances and media servers at different locations.
Without this touch file, we see that a remote media server is often chosen for duplication and/or restores.

Glad I could help!
