Process Flow for dedupe backups in media server and master when using 5020 appliances

We have 3 AIX Media Servers, Master is on Solaris, and six 5020 appliances in a single storage pool.  We have a 10 G between media servers and applainces but we get only a 25-30 Mbps backup speed.

First, we wish to understand the process flow for data from client to appliance. Data moves from client to media server, then we have finger printing on media server and the unique segments move over to the appliance.

We are not knowing what exactly happens after data is sent to media server, how does deduplication occur on media server, is the master involved in all this, is there a read and write at media server or master before data starts to goto appliances. What happens to data once media server gets it.

We are trying to check if there are any OS or netbackup issues.

The media servers act acting as fingerprint servers so examines everything comiong in at file and file segment level

Only new segemnts will be sent to the 5020 appliances

All of the data will flow from the clients to the media servers when not using client side de-dupe but only unique segemnts will flow to the 5020 appliances

The media sevrers will also be writing all information for the catalog to the Master server so that link is important too

If it feels like the 5020's have slowed down then take a good look at them as a disk failure or BBU Battery failure will slow them down dramatically

Hope this helps
