From the Admin Guide:

"...You cannot use a suspended volume for backups until retention periods for all backups on it have expired. At that time, NetBackup deletes the suspended volume from the NetBackup media catalog and unassigns it from NetBackup.

A suspended volume is available for restores. If the backups have expired, you must import the backups first..."

Similarly for frozen media:

"...A frozen volume is unavailable for future backups. A frozen volume never expires, even after the retention period ends for all backups on the media. The media ID is never deleted from the NetBackup media catalog, and it remains assigned to NetBackup.

2 Simple Options:

Turn ON the tape secure option (Lock the Tape) or Freeze the tape.

Also you can get out the tape from the library.

You can suspend the tape - either right-click in the GUI and select Suspend or do it from cmd:

bpmedia -suspend -m <media-id>

The action is the same as freeze except when the media ID expires, it is immediately unassigned in the NetBackup volume pool.

The tape can be re-used (overwritten) once expired.

-freeze
Freezes the specified media ID. When an active NetBackup media ID is frozen, NetBackup does not direct backups and archives to the media. All unexpired images on the media continue to be available for restores.
NetBackup never deletes a frozen media ID from the NetBackup media catalog, nor is it unassigned in the NetBackup volume pool when it expires.

NetBackup will not overwrite images on a tape until ALL images on that tape have expired.

If you are concerned that you have tapes that are due to expire & are in the library & they have images on that you feel you may need (for an imminent restore for example) then you could amend the expiration date of those images that are of interest or follow any of the options in the previous posts.

ok So when I do suspend for time being it does not do any harm(delete) to files right?.

and

I can use the tape for restores if I needed those files right?.
