Hi Team,
I'd like to know how best configure NBU and RMAN with destaging STU.
Basically the first backup is done to basic disk and the RMAN retention matches NBU retention (we have daily, weekly, monthy scripts)
To free disk space, this disk STU is configured for destaging, so NBU copies the backup to tapes, but it looks like RMAN is un-aware of this.
In fact, when I run a RMAN crosscheck, RMAN marks as expired the copeis that were on wisk and that now are on tape.
A possible but not viable workaroud could be to duplicate back the backup from tape to disk and rerun a crosscheck.
Are you aware of any other solutons ?
Is there a way to tell RMAN to restore from the copy to tape (after obviously making that a primary copy with NBU)
Thanks.
Francesco.

Diging deeper we found out that crosscheck was marking EXPIRED also the backups still on disk and not de-staged to tape.
I come across this 3d https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/forums/rman-crosscheck-expired-existing-backuppiece and changed the allocation adding the SEND parameters, this resolved the issue since crosscheck was now corretly talking to NBU and updating RMAN catalog accordingly.
Shame this tn link is not working

Thanks all for your imput.

Never heard of this.
Can you please provide output for one of the staged images before rman crosscheck is run?
bpimagelist -backupid <image-id> -L

Hi Francesco
The process of cross checking should not care about the location of the image copy. It just looks at the catalog to see if its available. What is your rman retention set to? It might be expiring those image from its own point of view (RMAN).
Can you post details?

Hi Riaan,
Thanks for your reply.
I will double check that point and et back to you. My understanding of crosscheck was that it checked the backups present on disk and marked then as expired if they were no longer there (in this case destaged)
Regards,
Francesco

rman does not know where NBU backups are written - it simply checks with the Master server for image expiration date/time.

Run RMAN command list backupset

Run a crosscheck allocating device type sbt_tape
Launched again RMAN list backupset, attached are the complete outputs.

I read somewhere that, if default device type in RMAN is disk then crosscheck marks EXPIRED all backup in its Catalog that are no longer on disk (in this case are on tape)
If I grep for "Status:" in the output of list backupset run after crosscheck, I do not see any Available bk anymore.
As long as the bks are marked EXPIRED I guess I cannot restore then back regardless if they are still on tape, correct? How about NB_ORA_COPY_NUMER ?
Any help is greatly appreciated.

In your example the bpimagelist shows the images are on disk, not tape?
10-13-2015 10:31 AM
True, let me double check that.
10-13-2015 11:24 AM
Cool, cause that invalidates your argument / theory :)

Hi Riaan,
something odd come up.
The bpimagelist the customer sent me yesterday, as you correctly pinted out, was showing the image was still on disk.
This morning the customer launched a destaging job manually and only today the actual bk id was copied to tape and the disk STU is now empty.
Since RMAN crosscheck check all backup sets that make a whole bk, it is possible that RMAN marked this particular bk id EXPIRED since portions of it were alreay on tape.
To you and the whole community I'd like to ask if you have ever configured Oracle bk to Destagin STU and if this supported or what I see is the expected behaviour.
Today I will repeat the entire test.

Hi Francesco,
That was an excerpt from the 7.5 Oracle manual.
I think this is the (updated) one you want:
...and here's the entire guide:
All of the "Example RAC configurations" can be found starting from page 228.
