Recommended Settings for RMAN backup on disk appliance

CoMurphy

Hello,

We are using 7.1.0.4 and we currently back everything up to tape. In one of our off site locations we have a disk appliance we would like to move backups to. We currently use RMAN oracle backups, we were wondering if there were any recommended RMAN settings for when going to disk instead of tape.

Thanks,
CM

Yes - also in the docs above.

Rman compression must be turned off when backing up to dedupe storage.

Hello,

What type of disk appliance? You don't really have to make any changes. From NBU Oracle Agent point of  view there is no difference as I see it. In general you can adjust buffer settings since disk and tape use different buffer settings in NBU.

For those settings you can look at http://www.symantec.com/docs/DOC4483

Not sure what type of Disk Appliance, but the recommended Oracle settings will work for any type of dedupe solution.

See recommendations for NBU for Oracle (and other DBs) with NBU Appliances in Symantec NetBackup 52xx Appliance Capacity Planning and Performance Tuning Guide:  http://www.symantec.com/docs/DOC6745

Table 10.1 starting on p.103.

Most important is that RMAN script should be changed to 'filesperset 1' and increase amount of channels.

We are currently using RMAN compression with 8 streams for tape, and we were told prior that we should be shutting off RMAN compression and lowering the streams when using disk.

Thanks,

CM
