Do you mean that once vault runs, you do not see the expected media on the 'vault_picklist' report ?

Hi,

there is two list prepared

1. media sent to offsite and

2. tapes to be returned offsite.

1st report is generated fine but second report returns empty list.

Please help us understand what you mean with this statement :

" ... but it is not fetching the scratch media. "

From where is NBU / Vault supposed to 'fetch' the scratch media?

Are you maybe referring to the "Pick list of expired media in the vault" report?
Can you check which reports have been configured/selected?

The documentation is the NetBackup Vault Administration Guide.

You can find links to the manuals for various NBU versions in 'Handy NBU Links' in my signature.

OK, so can you provide this output for a media you know is offsite, but should have come back, and is missing from the Vault picklist report.  In fact, could you provide the output for 2 or 3 tapes

vmquery -m <media ID>

Hello Marrine,

Thanks for the info.

Let me explain the scenario in detail.

The vault job is configured in my windows master such a way that every day one tape will be ejected (ie previous day backup) and one tape (scratch tape) will be requested from vendor. The vault wil send two reports directly to vendor "Tapes to be sent" and "tapes to be returned "

Last week we had some performance issue and recycled the services. From that time we are facing this issue. ie tape is ejected and report is sent to vendor. But the second report to inform which media should return back to DC is not coming.

The version of nbu is 6.5.5 and it is out of support.

So expecting your suggesstion.

Pls find the output.

I don't have a test machine to hand with vault on it ....   but ...

From memory once a tape is recalled (eg. expires and then vault is run the first time after it has expired) it is given a Vult return date ...

From your output

media ID: A002L6
volume pool: Scratch (4)
robot type: NONE - Not Robotic (0)
volume group: My_offsite_str
vault name: Alxxxx
vault sent date: 20/09/2017 06:06:37
vault return date: ---
vault slot: ---
vault session id: 755
vault container id: -

It's definately expired, and is also offsite - but it's missing the return date which I think it should have (once it is re-introduced the vault fields are cleared apart from the sessionID I think), so they haven't been cleared, it's also missing the vault slot.

I'll have to try and look at this later as I need to dash to an appointment, a couple of thoughts.

1.  You'll have to bring the tape back 'manually' and just invetory it back into the library

2.  If you look at other tapes that will expire soon, are they showing a vault slot

I have checked around 6 tapes and the below values are empty.

vault return date: ---
vault slot: ---
vault container id: -

OK,  so it seems they have not been recalled, probably because the slot (or container) is missing.

You should never guess with troubleshooting, but the majority of people use slots, so hopefully you do also.

NBU populates the slot when the tapes are ejected using vault.  When the tape expires, the next time vault is run, it will recall exired tapes that are 'vaulted'.   This populates the return date, and all vault info is cleared (apart form one field) when the tapes are inventoried back into NBU.

The question is why is the slot info missing - and for that I'm not sure we will find it,  If you still have the robot picklist report for when the tapes went out, if they are listed then it should have had a slot numer (or container).

The problem is finding what happened after this point, and the only thig I can think of, is that the tapes were bought back early for a restore, and then sent out again - I think that can cause this issue.

Perhaps the best way forward, is simply to bring the affected tapes back manually - easy to spot, expired tapes taht are in the offsite vault volume group.  Then, for the next few vault sessions, check that the tapes going out have the correct vault fields populated, and I supect you will find that they do.

Yes. I will check by loading the tapes into the library. Today 1 tape was ejected by vault and I checked the vaules in VMquery command.

The vault name and vault sent date is there. But Vault return date and vault slot is missing.

The return date will be missing until the tape expires, and vault is run again.

Is vault configured to use slots or containers ?

containers.

I would have to test using containers, I'll be honest that the vast majority of people use slots, and I cn't remember the last time I tried with containers - as you'll understad, I need to be sure what I 'say' is correct.  I'll do it as soon as I can, bit snowed under at the minute, if things are more 'urgent' log a call and post the number up here.

OK, so I just logged on from home - seem to be having a bit of a connection issue as my RDP session keeps dropping.

However, vault configured with slots, populates the fields as I previously explained.

Vault configured with containers behaves the same as you have found, no return date or container value.

I'll need to look at this (also known as read the manual) as I've not looked at containers for a few years (it's fairly rare).

However, is it possible you were previously using slots, and the vault config as accidently been switched to containers ?

I tested on NBU 8, now although containers are kinda rare (compared to slots) I'd image if there was a 'bug' it would have been fixed between 6.5 and 8.0 ...  so I'm thinking this is normal behavior, which could add weight to my thought that you were using slots previously.

Having checked the mnual, if using contains, you have to manyually add ejected medias to a container, for the vault fileds to be populated.
Further, vault does not 'auto' fill the return date for contains, it has to be viewed using container management part of vltopmenu, example below.

[root@nbmaster2 nbdb_test]# vltopmenu

From vmquery

vault name: vault
vault sent date: Tue 31 Oct 2017 03:24:06 AM EDT
vault return date: ---
vault slot: ---
vault session id: 6
vault container id: BOX1

Vault doesn't show a return date for containers, you have to check this is the Manage containers part of vltopmenu

Eg. (after expiring the tape in BOX10

Manage Containers:

m) Move media into one or more containers

e) Move all media ejected by this session, into one container
f) Move all media listed in a file, into one container

v) View a container's return date
r) Change a container's return date

d) Delete a container

q) Quit
b) Go back to previous menu

Selection--> v
Enter container ID:
(Press [Return] to view all containers' return dates.)
BOX1
return date of container BOX1 is 11/14/2017

Seeing that it seems that you had ths working previouly, I thinking now that you have accidently switched to using container when you were previously using slots, as, per the manual, and my test, containers do not automatically populate the return dates.

Hello Thanks.

Can you please help me how to switch back to slot instead of containers.

The issue is persiting over a week and i need a fix.

Can you please guide to move with slot.

Under Vault management on the left in the GUI, expand the option. You should see the robot, and underneath that the 'vault'.

Right click the vault and select change, on the right select to use Slots.

Thanks. I have done that.

It took the vailue of firts off slot id is 1.

the next tab  selected (default)  the retention mapping as per the vault process.

Hope this is correct i believe.

Will post the output tomorrow.

Really Thanks mph999  for your timely help. This was eating my head for the past 2 weeks. Hopefully tomorrow i am expecting positive result.

You are welcome, lets us see how it goes ...
