Remote shared Media server?

Will_Restore
Level 6

Client wants to backup to disk and send data over WAN to tape in remote site, I think it's OK, not the best scenerio though it should work

Then they want to add another site and send its data to same tape unit in remote site, I'm not sure if that will work.  Can two Masters share a Media server?

Correct - 2 media servers and 2 robots (or 2 logical robots if robot supports partitioning).

Robot, tape drives and media can only belong to one EMM server.

If robot is ACSLS controlled, this will work with different ACS pools and media ownership. Another media server would still be needed.

No. Cannot be done. A media server can only have one master and one EMM server.

Why not add the new site as a media server instead of another master?

Two distinct environments, thus two Masters. But they want to ultimately cut tapes at a another site.  I was thinking this would require two media servers.

Site A has tape robot

Site B backs up data to tape in site A

new site C also backs up data to tape in site A

Options

1. One master / media server site A - use clients for systems in site B and C.
Suitable if amount of data changed per backup is low and you can use client side de duplication.

2. One master at site A and media server site B and C.
Replicate from disk pool Site B and C to A and then to tape.
Seems to work OK with good WAN links

3. Master / media server at sites A, B and C but only 1 tape robat at site A
use AIR to replicate backups disk to disk to site A then to tape.

I have tried all above and found 1 and 3 to be the most suitable and reliable for my environment.

Reduces the need for the remote sites to handle tapes which can be a real pain if no reliable staff on site.
Some sites don't have offsite storage for backup tapes or are in remote locations.

Thanks!  We are looking at option 3 now.
