Restore Exchange 2007 CCR with Windows 2008 on RSG

MOIMOI
Level 4
Hi All,

I have a problem restoring Exchange 2007 CCR with is installed on Windows 2008 Server. I am able to backup the CCR using the Virtual name.

Setup is

2 mailbox servers MBX1 and MBX2 on CCR (on windows 2008 server)...Virtual name for the CCR is EVS1...
Netbackup Master Server is 6.5.3.1 and i used the Virtual Cluster name EVS1 for the making the backup policy and backed up the Exchange successfully.
Logs are stored in C drive and the Exchange DB is on E drive.
Once backed up i can see the IS as well as the logs.

When restoring

I created RSG..mounted the RSG and set up the option "Database can be overwritten by restore" and dismounted the RSG and tired the restore.

I select (under backup.archieve and restore) the Virtual Name EVS1 as source and destination (policy type is MS-Exchange server) and started the restore. I get the following error:

11:14:54 9/7/2009: Restore Started

Has any one tired the above scenario and had success? We still are not live yet coz i need to try the backups and restore before we go LIVE.

Thank you in advance.

Hi All,

Finally i have solved the CCR issue.

I upgraded the client agent to 6.5.3 (x64) on both MBX001 and MBX002. Used Virutal server name to backup the server.

created RSG on the active node i.e used virutal server name to login and created the RSG.

Mounted the RSG and flagged the data base can be over written byt restore option.

NOTE: make sure you DISMOUNT the RSG before you start the restore.

From Master server under backup, archieve and restore use click Action---->Restore---->General TAB select "Restore evertying on different location" and under destination make sure it is Microsoft Information Store:\Recovery Storage Group\

Also make sure under backup, archieve and restore--->file---->specify netbackup machines and policy type make sure the SOURCE and DESTINATION is the VIRTUAL SERVER NAME.

I restored it successfull and able to merge the mailboxes.

Thank you all for the comments and time.

Try this, On the restore options, select restore to an alternate location and enter Microsoft Information Store:\Recovery Storage Group\

Hi,

Sorry forgot to add that i had clicked the Alternate Location and entered Microsoft Information Store:\Recovery Storage Group\

Earlier i have succesfully done a RSG restore for Exchange 2007 but the CCR is a new concept for me.

Delete and recreate the RSG, delete the partial restored logs on the relevant directory and retry the restore.

hi,

I deleted the RSG and aslo the directory for log and the DB.

Recreated a new RSG and tired the restore but excatly same error. On Netbackup the NBUCODE is 5.

When i see the host properties of the EVS1 under client i can see MBX1 as the client. Basically this is the active node of the CCR.

Am i taking the backups in the write way?and if yes why the restore is failing?

Yes, the backups are being done the right way (I assume on the backup selection directive set you selected is MS_Exchange_200x and the directive is Microsoft Information Store), the active node will be the EVS1.

Just confirm your backup is not Mailboxes

MOIMOI

hi,

yes i have selected the MS_EXCHANGE_200x and used the EVS1 i.e the Exchange Virtual name for CCR.

I guess you will have to call Symantec Support for help, the will do a WebEx and sort out this problem. Sorry couldn't help.

Hi!

Did you get a solution for the restore problem? We are seeing the exact same problem.

Hi All,

I m sorry about the late reply as i was out of town.

i have noticed 2 things:

1. i m quite sure when i installed the agent on the CCR machine the agent would have been X 64 bit, coz the 32 bit version wont be installed.
2. while adding the Virtual Server Name (for Exchange CCR) in the Policy : the client name is "virtual server name" and the under "Hardware and Operating System"...... I selected PC, Windows 2008.

NOw the backups were successfull but the restores had problem as stated above. when the scroll down under "Hardware and Operating System" i see one more options called "PC-X64, Windows 2008". IS this the options to be selected ?

One more thing i have noticed under "Host Properties"---->"Clients" i see my virutal server name and besides that the Operatind System is Window 2008. But when the double click it and get the properties the Opertaing Systems changes to "WINDOWS VISTA(6). this is strange too. If the communication from Master Server to the Virtual Server is correct the OS should show WIndows 2008 even if i double click it to check out the properties.

I have another question "why netbackup doesnt commit the exchange log files?" "Why it also backups the log files even if it takes the full backup?" It should commit it right?

Hi all,

I have an update for the problem i wrote above, the second point.

i logged into my CCR active note i found that the client version was 6.5 (x 64), wat i did was upgraded it to 6.5.3 (x 64) version and now when the double click Virtual Server name it shows windows 2008 and not Windows Vista (6).

I backed up the CCR and now when i try to restore it on RSG i get this error. NOTE this error is not the one i psoted earlier.

Let me know what can be the problem. Do i have to specify the net backup cleint service under exchange to logon as the Administrator of the exchange?
