Restore Problem: error reading media tape header (172)

Hi All,

I have tried to search for this particular behaviour of Netbackup to no avail so posting this and any help will be much appreciated.

Windows 2003 environment
Netbackup v6 MP4

Firstly, backup to tape is always successful without any errors.

However, i have problems in restoring sql data.
SQL restores are set up so that .mdf ,.ndf and log files are first copied onto a spare server, databases attached over there, files retrieved and then updated on the live server.
I choose 'restore files and folders to a different location (double click to modify)' and have a network drive mapped to the spare server.

Error bptm(pid=3496) block read is not a NetBackup or Backup Exec media header, len = 65536, media id xxxx, drive index 3, data is unknown
29/09/2009 10:23:33 - Error bpbrm(pid=4188) from client AAAA: UTF - <path>.ndf
29/09/2009 10:23:38 - restored image xxx_xxx - (cannot read media header, may not be NetBackup media or is corrupted(172)); restore time 00:01:47
29/09/2009 10:23:40 - Warning bprd(pid=5544) Restore must be resumed prior to first image expiration on <date>
29/09/2009 10:23:42 - end Restore; elapsed time: 00:01:59
the restore failed to recover the requested files(5)

Many thanks

What tape driver are you using?
What is in the media server's bptm log?
Errors in Event Viewer System and Application log?
Sounds to me as if your problem is driver related or else the media is damaged.

Have you tried to restore from other backups taken (different media)?

Hi,

When you backup and try to restore to a alternate server, you should ensure the path you restore to has all the directory structure of production.  Else the restore will fail.

Hope this helps

thanks for your replies...

the files are backed up using SQL agent and there is a Catalogue policy in place which runs after the backups and is successful.
there is a directory structure in place that is the same as the live sql server.

At one time the restore seemed underway, with activity monitor showing 'reading tape' however towords the end i got error:

Error bptm (pid=3376) block read is not a Netbackup or Backup Exec media header, len=65536, media id = xxxxx. ... data is unknown ...

Which way you are trying to restore?

1.  Using BAR?
or
2.  From the SQL server ?

Are you trying to restore using same media server and drives?

If you are using a different media server for restore check for buffer size settings.

Hope you are not trying to read a new generation tape with old generation drive. Another thing to look at the drive firmware. Check if it is supported under the NetBackup version you are using.
