Not exactly the same thing. Daily backups could be Transaction Logs or Differential Dump as Weekly normally is a full one. If your daily is a full backup, you can restore your entire database using only it, if not, you will need a full one and then apply the subsequent dumps or transaction logs.
At first, don't mind about that, create the restore script to a 'roll forward' or 'point in time restore' and NBU will automatically request the tapes it needs (see the job details on activity monitor).
Normally works, if not, has something wrong with your SQL backup strategy (Wrong scripts definitions, wrong database configuration, wrong backup schedule configuration, and so on).
