Restore from OLD NAS to NEW NAS (NDMP)

dukbtr
Level 4
Hello,

We need to migrate from our old EMC NAS device to our new EMC NAS device.   The old nas only has 4 VTL DRIVES connected.  As a test we took a spare LTO3 drive and connected that to the new nas (direct).  I did a test backup of some directories on the old nas and then Duped them to tape using Vault.  When I try and restore to the new Nas using the tape I get:

1: (204) connection refused by server backup restore manager
2: (5) the restore failed to recover the requested files

I can backup and restore from the NEW nas using the attached drive with no issues.

Our environment is:

Master - HP-UX 11.23 AI-64 (NDMP HOST for both NAS devices)
NetBackup - 6.5.3.1
Old NAS (nas01)- EMC Celerra File Server.T.5.5.38.1
New Nas (nas01new)- EMC Celerra File Server.T.5.6.46.403

When I duped the tape I had to go back and run "bpmedia -movedb -oldserver.. -newserver..." to get the owner of the tape to be that of the new nas.

Adding entry in media host override did not help.  Is this a case of DART OS version being different? Does NetBackup somehow not think this is an NDMP host and thinks it is a client?

Can you do a restore redirect to a Windows host?

Often I find that NDMP restores between vendors is impossible as they do not standardize on the right features in their NDMP implementation.  Thus a redirected restore to a Windows host is the only option.

dukbtr, can you please give a short explanation of how the restore was initiated?
Seems NBU is treating this a normal client restore and not NDMP.
Connection attempt to vnetd on new NAS:
 09:07:52.191 [17619] <2> local_bpcr_connect: nb_connect_to_vnetd_service(nas01new.sterling.com) failed: 25
  09:07:52.192 [17619] <2> local_bpcr_connect: Can't connect to client nas01new.sterling.com
  09:07:52.192 [17619] <2> ConnectToBPCD: bpcd_connect_and_verify(nas01new.sterling.com, nas01new.sterling.com) failed: 25

It could be because of the bpmedia -newserver command - I don't think media is ever 'owned' by NAS devices, but by the media server through which the devices are configured.

What is your NDMP config? Remote-NDMP, 3way-NDMP or Single-NDMP? after this we can tell where the problem is but is clearly an access issue, have you test all your settings with set_ndmp_attr commands? just to be sure all connectivity and user access are fine.

Both Nas devices are backed up Directly backed up (No remote or  3ways).

I changed the media owner to the new nas device because when I look at all the media.  Any that was written to from the nas  has media owner = nas01.xxxxxxxx.com

Yes, set_ndmp_attr returns fine.

Can you I import a tape to the drive connected to the New NAS?  Would that maybe help

Are both filers tape drives under the same library? I ask because it can be that you are using a differnt library and to run a restore from the old filer you will need to configure a 3way-NDMP restore to be able to allow the new filer to see the tape drive used by the old filer.

Let us know.

I have tested this and found when the backup is written to tape drive / robot attached direct to the filer even though the backup header file has the host as the media server and not the filer the filer will become the owner.

This must have changed at some stage not sure exactly when.

If you run the bpmedialist -h media_server_hostname  the media id for the backup will not show.

If you then run the same command and this time specify the ndmp hostname the media details will show up. Must be same as configured in credentials. EG FQDN or shortname.

You will need to move the media from the old ndmp hostname to a valid media server hostname and then restores will still work.

bpmedia -movedb -oldserver [ndmp_hostname] -newserver [media_server] -m [media_id]

The new media servers library  must of course have access to the tape.

Not sure at this stage if moving it to another NDMP filers hostname will work.

You could always mount the paths via NFS or CIFS and do an alternate restore via the client you mounted them on.

We got it to work, sometimes.  I changed the tape to our master server as the owner.  Tried the restore and some directories worked and others failed.

The tapes that I imported all restored fine with no errors.
