Restores to NAS

Good Morning,

When performing a restore, is possible to land the data onto a NAS. I have a drive mapped to a 24TB area, however, when attempting a restore I get the following error:

15:16:52 (255.001) TAR - E:\****\****\D\Inetpub\wwwroot\aspnet_client\system_web\1_1_4322\SmartNav.htm

I can however restore the same data to the local Media Server.

Thanks,

Steve

Win32 error code 3 is PATH_NOT_FOUND

https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/ms681382(v=vs.85).aspx

You may need to change the logon account of the NetBackup Client service to use an account name which has write access permissions to the target restore path.

In addition to changing NBU Client Service logon account, specify UNC path as destination rather than a drive letter.

Hi,

Since adding a local account to the Windows server that matches the account defined on the FreeNAS storage array, and using a UNC path, I thought this had resolved the problem. However I'm still experiencing problems.

Below is the latest log info from a restore I attempted this morning.

Can you logon as the user used for NBU Client Service account?

Can you open the UNC path and then navigate to the folder where you are trying to restore to?

Can you create empty text file in this folder?

SteveDown
Level 5

For the NBU Client Service account, this has been created as a local Windows user and defined with the same name and password as it exists on the NAS share. The NBU server is not part of a domain, not sure if that matters here.

I can map a drive to the NAS share, connecting with the 'restore' account, and create files and copy files into the restore location.

I can do the same via the UNC path.

Earlier I changed the Client Service account and defined it with the root id to see if that would help, results below.

14:26:38 (285.001) TAR - E:\******\VSQL02\S\FTData\ix_AITPorta1_SITE\MssearchCatalogDir\Used0000.002

Win32 error code 5 is Access Denied. Double check your permissions, group membership?

SteveDown

I notice that I'm unable to select the tick box, Restore without access control attritbutes. Because I'm restoring data to a Unix platform for storage purposes, I'm suspecting that I might need to enable this. However, I'm unable to find where to enable this.

Win32 error code 50:

ERROR_NOT_SUPPORTED
50 (0x32)
The request is not supported.
.
Win32 error code 1307:
ERROR_INVALID_OWNER
1307 (0x51B)
This security ID may not be assigned as the owner of this object.
.
Can I just ask - are you restoring from a Windows client backup to a CIFS/SMB share on a Unix platform?  But earlier you said the target is a NAS?  Is the restore a Samba share?  Apologies, but I'm a bit confused as to the nature of the source and target.  Could you spend a few moments to describe the versions and platform types and the storage configuration constructs?  Thanks.

The tapes I'm restoring are from a Windows environment.

FreeNAS is used to manage storage with a CIF volume defined for holding the data.

Unfortunately I didn't create the storage/share, the guy that did it is on holiday so I'm struggling without his input.

SteveDown

I'm using FreeNAS to manage the storage area, which is a Unix platform with a CIF share defined via FreeNAS.

The data I'm trying to restore is from different Windows environments, such as Sharepoint and Exchange. The data is being archived to mass storage rather than keeping it on tape.

Unfortunately the person that created the volume/share is on holiday so I'm a bit stuck for the details.

A wild guess is... Is the FreeNAS a member of the domain that the Windows server backup came from?  It seems as if the FreeNAS is not accepting the ACE/ACL/permissions of the files being written to it.

SteveDown

The FreeNAS is not a member of the same Windows domain, all the backups have been performed in locations from around the world and have been returned to a central location for tape duplication and subsequent restoration to disk storage.

What's the latest Steve?  Still not working for some backup images, or not working at all for any and all backup images?

SteveDown

Hi... no change unfortunately.

I can restore data to the Media Server. However when I attempt a restore to the NAS, the folder structure is created but files the files I see appearing in the folders have a zero size.

Does the same happen when you use Windows File Explorer to copy, or the DOS/cmd 'copy' command?

Perhaps you could try restoring to/from a media server to a UNC path, i.e. not to client with a mapped drive?

SteveDown

We've manage to resolve the problem by creating an iSCSI Initiator connection. Everything restores fine now.

Thanks

Still permission issue on the NAS. Glad you found a workaround by presenting the storage as a local drive. Just wondering how file security is addressed with these restores and NBU attempting to restore original permissions...

SteveDown

Some folders are presenting a security issue. I can drill down a folder structure and see files etc, however there are a number of folders that won't let me in and I get Access Denied. Not sure how we're going to get round that.
