I have a current backup policy which goes to a disk staging unit and then is duplicated to tape.
We have duplications set for monday - friday.
If I want to retain backups on disk for a 30 day period, how can I do this effectively while moving backups to tape as well for archiving?

Or use the advanced disk option with SLP. It give you the option for a " Desired cache Period".
See Admin Guide Volume 1 -page 753 : http://www.symantec.com/docs/DOC5157

you need to disable the Disk staging and use the
1) Vault or
2) manual duplciation ( though scrips)
to get this done..
make sure you disk STU has enough space to hold the images for 30 days.

With Disk Staging, retention on disk is controlled by 2 things:
1. High Water Mark when images have been duplicated
2. Retention level in the schedule.

As Nicolai said - best to have Advanced disk license so that you can config SLPs.
