Dear All ,

We have symantec netbackup 7.0 with 2 tier architecture ( Master server & media server on one server & Enterprise client license ). Now we are going to configue SAN backup for SAN client.

I did following configuration

1) made one SAN backup zone on SAN switch & put all SAN client & Master server with media server in that zone.

2) install backup client on client server.

3) run command on client server  Install_path\NetBackup\bin\bpclntcmd.exe -sanclient 1 & reboot the client.

4) After that I run device configuration wizzard & got SAN client discovered there & I got my client in SAN client tab.

  Now I have following querry

1)how to configure the backup for this SAN client over SAN .

2) Where to connect the tape drive ( on media server or on SAN client )

 3) FT server or FT media server is required or not.

1)how to configure the backup for this SAN client over SAN .

There are no configuration steps at policy level. After configuring SAN Client and FT server, backups on SAN client travels over SAN by default.

2) Where to connect the tape drive ( on media server or on SAN client )

Backup destination storage must be configured on FT media server. Connect tape devices to FT media server and configure devices and storage units for them.

 3) FT server or FT media server is required or not.

FT media server is necessary for FT transfer.

Thanks Yasuhisa for quick reply.

We have 4 tape drive & one  SAN tape library. I want to use one drive for each SAN client. Is it require to attach each drive to each SAN client or all drive should be connected to to media server  & make Storage unit for each drive & assign particular  storage unit to particular backup policy.

secondly without FT media server SAN client backup is possible or not.

For FT media server  only Qlogic HBA card is supported or any card support. Because I read some docs & in that  nbhba drivers are compatible with Qlogic HBA card.

we are assigning one drive for one client So to configure FT media server SSO ( Shared storage Option ) is required or not.

You cannot dedicate one drive per client and cannot config 4 STU's.

Storage Unit is config'ed at Media server level.
1 Robot with 4 same density drives = 1 STU with 4 Max Concurrent drives.

SSO license is needed if you config clients as SAN Media servers instead of SAN Clients.
You can config 1 drive per client if you config them as SAN media servers instead.
You will need Enterprise Client license for each client.

Thanks Marianne ,

In short you want to say I need to make one STU of 4 tape drive & assign the same STU to all 4 backup job & backup job will run on free drive in the STU.

Second thing I have two tier architecture windows Master/EMM/media server &  3 client. We also have Enterprise client license.so by using Enterprise client license I can make backup client as SAN client.right & can I make windows Master/EMM/media server as FT media server in this scenario or not.

OR only linux 64 bit server & Solaris & SUSE linux are the only supported platform for FT server & not for windows server.

Also we don't have SSO license . Please suggest me best practise design for this scenario.

Dear All ,

Can any one tell me what are the required licenses for SAN media server for following my setup

1) we have one master server/EMM/Media server ( Two tier )

2) 3 Enterprise client license for 3 backup client to whom one tape drive ( seperate for each  client ) attached through SAN

3)Since we have 3 SAN library with 3 tape drive & each drive is reprsented to single client. In that case suppose we want to make each backup client as SAN media server  then SSO license is required or not.

we donnot have SSO license.

I need urgent help so help me as early as possible.

Your posts are very confusing.

Two days ago you said:

We have 4 tape drive & one  SAN tape library. I want to use one drive for each SAN client.

Today:

we have 3 SAN library with 3 tape drive

So, what do you actually have? One library with 4 drives or 3 libraries with 3 drives each or one drive per library?

Once we know what you actually have it will be easier to provide advice.

one library with 4 drive &  each drive is connected to single client. Want to configure each client as its own SAN Media server. We donot have SSO license. We have only following licenses.

1) SYMC  NETBACKUP OPTION LIBRARY BASED TAPE DRIVE 7.5 XPLAT PER DRIVE STD LIC --- 4 Qty

2) SYMC NETBACKUP ENTERPRISE CLIENT 7.5 WIN/LNX/SOLX64  1 SERVER TIER 2 STD LIC ---  3Qty

3)SYMC NETBACKUP ENTERPRISE SERVER 7.5 WIN/LNX/SOLX64 1 SERVER TIER 2 STD LIC---  1 Qty

So please suggest with this license can we configure each client as SAN media server for only itself or SSO license is required.

I need urgent help so help me as early as possible.

Yes, with these licenses you can configure each client as SAN Media server.

Zone the robot and 1 tape drive to the master, and one drive to each client/SAN media server.

Install Media Server software on each client.
Add Enterprise Client license as well Library Based tape drive license during installation.
Add all 3 clients as Media Servers on Master server (Host Properties -> Master -> Servers).
Restart NBU Database Manager service on Master after adding Server entries.

Check connectivity with these commands on Master:
nbemmcmd -listhosts -verbose
nbemmcmd -getemmserver

Ensure devices are visible at OS level on Master and San Media servers before you config them in NBU:
Run 'scan' in volmgr\bin.

Run Device Config Wizard.
Select Master and San Media servers
Add Storage Units - there will be 4 STU's, each with one drive. Ensure STU's for SAN Media servers have 'On Demand Only' selected in STU properties.

Add policies for each Client/SAN media server. Select dedicated STU for each.

Use Master server's STU to backup NBU catalogs.

Best to consider getting SSO license - this will allow any media server to use any available tape drive. Even when 1 drive is faulty will all servers be able to use remaining drives.

One more query on SAN Media server .

I need to install media server package on the server whose backup I want to take by using enterprise client license key & no need to install client software. Please suggest whether I am correct or I need to install client software also.

Yes , You have to install Enterprise Client license as well Library Based tape drive license during installation and then add those clients in the host properties as media servers

Server software includes client software (as well as all agents and options). No need for separate software install. All of this is documented in the Installation Guide.
