What path does the data take if it is duplicated with SLP?
Is it transferred directly via SAN between the involved storage boxes? Or is it SAN from source storage to media server of source STU, and then LAN to media server of target STU, and then SAN again to target storage?

In that case traffic will go over LAN when replicating data with SLP.
You want a very strong network with enterprise grade switches when working with Netbackup. Switch ports need to be non-blocking.
Also, you don't want to write and read to the same disk pool at the same time using spinning disk. There should be time for writing (backup) and reading (replication).

You did not tell what type of equipment you have.
But in general SLP traffic is send over the network.
In a SAN you have targets (e.g disk, tape drives, changers) and initiators (hosts). Two targets cannot exchange data without some sort of initiator (data mover) being involved. Much like the old days with SCSI.
Some storage device are able to exchange data direct via SAN direct (OST devices) - like Data Domain if I recall correctly, but those device as not "pure" storage devices. There are server running inside them. So check the manual if you have that kind of device around.

We are still in the planning phase. Most probably it will be HDS disk storage configured in NetBackup as MSDP.
