Hi All , Can someone please explain to me. With regards to the rention period on the default application schedule for sql, if i create other schedules like daily and weekly and give them their own retention periods, do they inherit the retention of the default application or not? if not please explain to me how this retention affects the backups

No - only Default Application Schedule determines actual backup retention.

For this reason we normally create separate policies for daily and weekly so that different retentions can be specified for  Default Application Schedule.

If you have NetBackup 7.7 on both server and sql client side, you can take benefit of "intelligent" MS SQL policies. Retention management is a bit easier with them, because they don't need "Application Backup" schedule type. You use schedule/retention schemas like with filesystem or VMware policies.
