SQL Server Restore Recommendations

Hello Everybody,

We have been debating best practices for restoring a SQL Server and wanted to get some feedback.

Currently we have 1 master and 1 media server in a Windows environment. We backup the OS with NetBackup, excluding db file types. We back up the databases using a 3rd party solution (LightSpeed).

The question is what is the best method for recovering a failed SQL Server?

Some admins on the team think we are wasting our time and resources even backing up the OS with NetBackup on these boxes. That we could simply rebuild the box from scratch then rebuild the database from the LightSpeed backup.

Other admins think we need to recover the OS using Netbackup then recover the database from LightSpeed.

I guess we are looking at what will do the job completely and in the best time with minimal risk. Any thoughts, suggestions?

If the server does no other function than SQL then simply ghost the server or replicate.

Restore the SQL database with the lightspeed image.

What would your restore proceedure be for a cluster SQL setup? Per NetBackups support recommendation we backup clustered boxes with two policies. One backs up local drives and the second backs up the shared drives.

That will work
