SharePoint Server 2013 backup and recovery supports for Netbackup 7.6

John_Santana

Hi People,

Can anyone here please clarify if the current version of Netbackup v7.6 supports SharePoint 2013 backup and restore ?

if yes, that type of backup or restoration does it supports ?

Do I need to install the SQL Server backup agent as well to simultaneously backup the SharePoint server and the Database on separate SQL Server box ?

Thanks.

SharePoint 2013 is supported, see page number 24 in below compatablity list

http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH126904

see the below note:-

The NetBackup client software must be installed on each of the following: the front-end Web server, the SQL database host, and the Index Files or the Index database host. The client software does not need to be installed on the Search or the Job servers.

Only add the client that is the front-end Web server and that runs the Central Administration Service to the policy list.

In addition, please take note that:

NB7.6 starts supporting backup & restore of Sharepoint 2013 in farm level, but not GRT.

For GRT support on Sharepoint 2013, you need to go to NB7.6.0.3

Let us go back to the manuals.

NBU for SharePoint Admin Guide: http://www.symantec.com/docs/DOC6480
Article:DOC6480     |     Created: 2013-04-30     |     Updated: 2014-04-16

So, the updated doc (2014-04-16)  is now called NetBackup7.6v2_AdminGuide_SharePoint.pdf

Bottom of page 14:

Restores of individual
items and document sets
using Granular Recovery
Technology (GRT)

When a backup uses GRT, users can restore individual lists, items. and documents sets
directly from any full database backup of a Web application. This feature adds an extra
step that identifies the items within the database. This step lets you recover individual items
later. (Note that you must create a separate backup for the full farm.)
Note: In NetBackup 7.6, GRT is not supported with SharePoint 2013. This functionality
will be added in a future release.

Now we go to the Compatibility Guide that gets updated each time a new NBU patch level is released with new functionality:

NetBackup 7 Application/Database Agent (CL):    http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH126904
Article:TECH126904     |     Created: 2010-01-13     |     Updated: 2014-08-11

NetBackup (tm) 7.x Database Agent Compatibility (Updated August 11, 2014)

Look at Release History on page 2.

Then go to the SharePoint section and note the [1] next to SharePoint 2013.

If we go to the footnote on page 26, we see this:

1. GRT support began in NetBackup 7.6.0.3.

So, this is the  functionality ... added in a future release.   (7.6.0.3)

I hope this is clear now?

You will be able to restore single items IF you have a successful GRT backup to disk storage.

ok, so in this case it is possible for the GRT restoration.

because i was reading to this article:

■ SharePoint 2013 support (database only). Please note, Granular Recovery

Technology (GRT) backups are not supported with this release.

SharePoint Server backup operations

You can use the NetBackup for SharePoint Server agent to back up the entire

SharePoint Server farm or individual components. NetBackup provides the following

methods to perform backups:

■ Automatic

■ Manual

■ User-directed

Introducing NetBackup for SharePoint Server 15

SharePoint Server backup operations

For general information on backup methods in NetBackup see the NetBackup

Administrator’s Guide, Volume I.

The NetBackup administrator can schedule the backups that occur automatically

and unattended under the control of the NetBackup Server. The following types of

automatic backups are available:

The entire contents in the backup selections list are backed

up.

Full schedule

Only the contents that have been added or changed since the

previous full or incremental are included in the backup.

Differential incremental

Manual backup may be used for special events. A manual backup includes all the

items in the backup selections list of the policy you selected for backup.

User directed backups require a User Backup schedule to be defined on a

SharePoint policy on the NetBackup Server. A user-directed backup includes the

entire contents of the items that are selected for backup. This type of backup is

only supported from the SharePoint application host, not on other hosts where only

SharePoint objects are present.

THanks all.

Cool,

many thanks Marianne for the detailed explanation :)

it's all make sense now.

I'll have to create two type of backup:

SharePoint Content DB backup --> required to be able to fully restore GRT
Full Farm backup --> for complete farm restore in the event of a disaster.
