Thanks for all advice - the exclusions did get the non-GRT backups to work.

The main issues I found wrt Sharepoint and AD GRT backups was that we had firewalls all over the place and the requirement for ports 111 and 7394 for GRT backups was not in the checklist I was initially following...

1) Are there any errors in the event viewer during the time of the backup on the FE server ?

( any VSS or ESE errors ? )

2) Please upload the bpresolver and spswrapper from the FE for review.

Thankyou for your response.

I have been instructed to exclude the Index files from the non-GRT backups as they are generated weekly in any case (and the Admin Guide says to exclude them too). But I am still curious as to why some of them fail and others succeed...

I will advise how the backups go after the exclusion either tomorrow or on Wednesday.

Not sure if this TN will help - it contains a comprehensive checklist to get Sharepoint backups working:

The Sysadmin guide on page 63, goes into policy setup for non-grt backups.
