Snapshot Error 156

spider328
Level 4

I'm wondering if there is any workaround in doing a snapshot for Windows servers having vmware tool version:10272.

VMs with lower version of vmware tools installed does not have the same issue. Our Windows server group does not want to roll back to an older version of vmware tools.

vCenter showing "The guest OS has reported an error during quiescing. The error code was: 5 The error message was: 'VssSyncStart' operation failed: IDispatch error #8454....."

I know this is not an issue with NetBackup but with VMWare and Windows but I just like to throw this issue out there in case anybody has a creative solution of capturing a snapshot.

Thanks.

Hello

Disable the quiescing while doing the backup see if that works

you can disable quiescing form advanced options from VMware tab of Netbackup policy.

keep in mind , disabling the quiescing will not flush any data in memory to disk at the time of backups.. so the data in memory does not capture in snapshots.

Hi

Take a look this TN https://packages.vmware.com/tools/versions . It contains all versions of VMware tools, and the followings informations

# Column 1: Tools version on NGC/VI Client
# Column 2: ESXi server version.'esx/0.0' indicates that the tools version is not yet bundled with ESXi.
# Column 3: Tools version on guest Setup/About page
# Column 4: ESXi server build number

Your VMwaretools version is one of them

These are the VMware Tools Release Notes, can you check it? I've checked them and I foud only one issue for "Quiesce" on version 10.1.0...There are 2 build numbers for this version, can you check? Maybe one of them can help you.

Ohter thing, Its seems a windows vss problem, specially with the error message that you posted.

Error:
vCenter showing "The guest OS has reported an error during quiescing. The error code was: 5 The error message was: 'VssSyncStart' operation failed: IDispatch error #8454....."

Thanks for your inputs.

Disabling quiescing is not being recommended. Appreciate the suggestion though.

As for the vmware technotes, I looked at those and did not see issues referring to the issue we are seeing with W12K.

Anyway, will continue to research and really appreciate your feedbacks.

Hi,

I'm seeing the same issues.  Has anyone else seen this, or figured out a workaround?  Only happening on Windows VMs (mostly 2012R2) with tools version 10272.  Running Netbackup 7.7.3.

Tyler

Hi @tgray21,

What is your VSphere version? In VMware ESXi 6.0 version there is a patch. Take a look

Hi @Thiago_Ribeiro,

We are using VSphere 6.0 U3, so I will check to see if we have this patch applied.  Thanks for your help and the quick response!

Tyler

Hello @spider328 @tgray21,

I found this from NetBackup for VMware Administrator's Guide, pag 277. Take a look.

Can you check if it can be applied to your environments?
