Snapshot error (156) on servers

Hi,

On a couple of servers the backup continuously fails due to snapshot (156) errors that make no sense...

We are using NBU 5.1 MP1 & VSP snapshot provider (I did not change any of the snapshot settings, so NBU determines the best settings)

The error I get for instance:

6/19/2005 6:19:53 AM - started process bpbrm (5492)
6/19/2005 6:19:53 AM - connecting
6/19/2005 6:19:54 AM - connected; connect time: 00:00:01
6/19/2005 6:19:56 AM - Warning bpbrm(pid=5292) from client apl85: WRN - can't open file: C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT (WIN32 5: Access is denied. )
6/19/2005 6:19:56 AM - Error bpbrm(pid=5292) from client apl85: ERR - Snapshot Error while opening file: Volume{939eec58-deb5-47e1-a4ca-a21bd7d8873b}\AUTOEXEC.BAT
6/19/2005 6:19:56 AM - Critical bpbrm(pid=5292) from client apl85: FTL - Backup operation aborted!
6/19/2005 6:19:58 AM - end writing; write time: 00:00:05
snapshot error encountered(156)
6/19/2005 6:19:59 AM - Error bpsched(pid=3436) backup of client apl85 exited with status 156 (snapshot error encountered)

But maybe the next days it fails on an INI file of 1k...

The client has been reinstalled several times (MP1), to no avail...

The server seems to have plenty of space on the C: drive to make the snapshots (17 Gb Free). The server does contain some 5 Gb files, but it never fails on those...

Anybody ran into these problems & found a solution???

Hope you guys can help!

Manfred

I have ran across this in our backups. It appears that occasionally if fails when it try's to backup a file that is locked. To keep the job from failing I went to the client attributes > snapshot error control and selected disable snapshot & continue. This way if it fails on the snapshot the backup job will continue to backup the rest of the data.

I found the following tech note.
according to the document the 156 error is due to your cache file running out of allocated space. http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/276739.htm
You will need to increase your cache size. But if you have under snapshot error control and select disable snapshot & continue, your job will continue to backup the rest of your data.Message was edited by:
