Standard Backup Wildcards Doesn't Work

Limberth1

Hello, we have many windows server with the following path "k:\*******\BasesDatosAudit" and there are other folders on "K:/" that I don't need to backup , on each server the name of the first folder is different but it is always 7 characters, I need to backup the folder "BasesDatosAudit", I want to have just one policy having all those servers.

I tried in the backup selection just with "K:\", on each client in the Exclude List I excluded "K:\" and in the Exceptions to the exclude list I added the specific folder I want to backup for that client for example "k:\1234567\BasesDatosAudit", but it doesn't work, I don't see errors on the log but doesn't backup anything.

I also tried diferent combinations of exclude list and exceptions but I can´t make it work correctly, I really appreciate your advices.

Please tell me if you don't understand what I need.

Instead of exclude list try this for backup selection

K:\???????\BasesDatosAudit\

Thank you Will_Restore, but is not working, can't find the folder.

Couple of things

1.  Are you sure the user the client service is running as has access to the folders?  Just a thought.

2. Do you have the right number of question marks?  If memory serves me right, using multiple ? wild cards will dictate that there must be that number of characters in the folder name.

Well, now I feel kind of silly.  I went and did a RTFM function, and look what I found:

Asterisks (*) and question marks (?) are the only wildcard characters allowed in the backup
selection list for Windows clients.
Square brackets and curly brackets are not valid for Windows clients and can cause backups
to fail with a status 71.
For Windows clients, wildcards function correctly only when they are placed at the end of the
path, in the file or directory name. For example:
C:\abc\xyz\r*.doc
Wildcard characters do not work elsewhere in the path. For example, an asterisk functions
as a literal character (not as a wildcard) in the following examples:
C:\*\xyz\myfile
C:\abc\*\myfile

So I think your approach is to use exclude/include lists, not the policy.

I think you do something like an exclude of K:\?????? (without a trailing slash) and the include is K:\??????\* but this is completely off the top of my head.  I'd need to think this through a little more.

To see why your exclude and include lists are not working, create bpbkar log folder on the client and change logging level to 1.
The log will show how NBU interprets the exclude and includes.

Probably a good idea to also RTFM wrt exclude and include lists...

Thank you both, I tried the following, the backup selection in the policie is K:\ , also I added an exclusion on the client "K:\SQL2565DB\BasesDatosBackups", the policie ends with status 0, but didn't backup anything.

I was expecting that NBU backed up everything on K:\ except the folder "K:\SQL2565DB\BasesDatosBackups" but as I told you didn't backup anything.

Attached the bpbkar hoping you can help me.

looks like the entire volume is excluded from backup

Do you still have the old exclude list in place?
