Status Code 25: cannot connect on socket

16ris10
Level 6

Master Server: udin06  - (Solaris10 – NBU 7.1)

Client: sdib, or sdin (two interfaces, B at end is the backup interface) – Solaris10

Backup failing with Status 25, cannot connect or socket. Through GUI hostproperties too, it doesnt connect.

IP address and Names have been changed for security reasons.

I won’t be able to provide the logs, but let me know what specifically are you loking for? Or give me sometime, i’ll change few things and would post asap. Would appreciate if it could be done without the logs cause they’re too big to change IPs and hostnames. Although the problem doesn’t seem difficult to tackle but I’ve spent days just to get this error fixed, but all in waste. Seems like a firewall issue but not sure.

All the commands were run from Master server.

This means udin06 can not communicate with sdib01. There are no available route from udin06 to sdib01.
You should talk with network team, and OS team as well.

Kindly ensure the following:

  • turned off firewall
  • NBU client service should be running
  • Open required ports and network connection

Please create bpcd log file on client.

Run bptestbpcd again to sdib01 and post client's bpcd log file.

If you run bptestbpcd with -verbose -debug, you will notice that 1st connection attempt is on PBX (1556), then vnetd (13724). Please ensure that those 2 ports are open in both directions between server and client.

Also run the following on client and post output:

bpclntcmd -self

checkhaddr: host   : udin06: udin06.my.company.com at 155.60.200.10 (0x9b60ca22)

checkhaddr: aliases:

$ ./bpclntcmd -self

$ ./bpclntcmd -pn

(((no response, the client just hangs)))

I don't have access to client, so it would take some time. But i have a 5 days old bpcd log from client.

The NBU 6.5.5 is the old master server's (udin02) version where client used to be. the client had not been backed up for the last 10 days, am not sure before that.

  • turned off firewall
    I don't have the access to client, but anyway how to make sure its off? Please? It's Solaris10.

  • NBU client service should be running
    Netstat -a shows PBX running.

  • Open required ports and network connection
    How do I do this/see?

bptestbpcd is telling us that the server is first trying PBX (1556), then vnetd (13724), then bpcd (13782).

OLD bpcd log from  client that shows connection attempt from OLD master (udib02.my.company.com) is not going to help anybody.

We need client's bpcd log file that corresponds with bptestbpcd from udin06.my.company.com.

^ ok that bp.conf was of the master server.

here's for the client sdin01. :|

cat bp.conf
SERVER = udin06
SERVER = udin06.my.company.com
SERVER = udib06
SERVER = udib06.my.company.com
CLIENT_NAME = sdib01
REQUIRED_INTERFACE = sdib01.my.company.com
VERBOSE = 5
DAYS_TO_KEEP_LOGS = 3

Ok, i got what you asked for. I ran the bptestbpcd at around 14:39:55 and it ran till 14:45:07. Providing you the BPCD log file around that time.

Lol, there is a blunder in bp.conf file at client side, but what else beside that mistake? :)

Attaching both files.

bpcd log looks like the master server's log. We need the client's bpcd log.

16ris10
Level 6

No, it is client's log. for sure.. :(

16ris10

but are you sure, since i did not pull up the log, sys admin did. did ask him to get it from theclient, but may be he got confused cause i asked him to place in My server's directory which happens to be master's server in this case here.. :|

First entry in bpcd log is bptm being called to report tape drives. This only happens on a media server.

The only connections that are logged is the server connecting to itself:

logconnections: BPCD ACCEPT FROM 155.60.200.10.65065 TO 155.60.200.10.13782 fd = 0

16ris10

Grrr... I so wanna smack the sys admin now. :(

Wait lemme get the client one now. :|

Ok, I just requested for a BPCD log of client, and its the same. May be it's not configured properly? Have a look at the bp.conf file? :)

16ris10
Level 6

I just got to know, the IP of the client is not included in any VLAN, so it cannot be backed up obviously, no? But now here am looking if there are other problems too. :(

16ris10

This is the only entry i find relating to bptm. are you talking about this?

14:50:13.932 [29277] <2> process_requests: immed cmd = /usr/openv/netbackup/bin/bptm -delete_all_expired 1>/dev/null 2>/dev/null

16ris10

if i mention this, would this bypass any firewall settings configured. currently i don't see anything here in Solaris10:

echo "bpcd: ALL" >> /etc/hosts.allow
echo "vnetd: ALL" >> /etc/hosts.allow

bptm binary only exists on master and media server, not on a system where only client binaries are installed. bpcd on a media server calls bptm periodically to check drive status.

If we get the actual client's bpcd log, we should be able to see if there is a port problem (/etc/hosts.allow) or hostname/SERVER entry problem.

The client's bpcd log will look similar to the 1st one that you've posted.
