Status code 156 backing up snapshots.

I'm getting a lot of status 156 all with the WRN - All Local Drives not frozen.  Some are old 2000 VMs.  Some are 2008r2.  Really no rhyme or reason I can come up with.  I've been looking at support center posts all day and none of them seem to have a solution for me.

Without knowing which documentation you had a look at and what troubleshooting steps you have performed, it is very difficult (impossible) to give advice.

This TN has helped me personally to find reason for status 156 in my test environment (I did not find bpfis logs helpful):  http://www.symantec.com/docs/HOWTO44492

In my environment, RDM disks caused 156.
Workaround:
Either install client software in VM or use Shapshot Client...

Please let us know if you have explored all possible reasons listed in TN.

These are the causes for 156 that i have seen:

1. Low disk space on the LUN where the VM exists

2. Upgrade the VMWare tools

Disable the  application quiesceing and do the following
on the guest VM guest, create a file in  \VMware\VMware Tools\tools.conf
Add this to the file:

[vmbackup]
vss.disableAppQuiescing = true

Close/save the file and then restart the guest.

NetBackup Master version ????

Backup host version ???

ESX/i version ????

Do you see any events logged under vSphere or vCenter ???

Does it happens randomly with any guest or perticular one ???

Does this VM have independent disk assigned ? If so then deploy agent within Guest VM, Independent disk cannot be captured with snapshots.

From my experience, I would normally get a 156 if there's a snapshot that already exists either on VCenter or on the mountpoint(if you doing VCB backups). In that case you'd  need to delete the existing snapshot and try the backup again.
