Storage server credentials makes restores to use the wrong media server

Hi

I'm having a problem with the "optimized duplication" requirements and it's affects.

Environment: Netbackup 7.1.0.4
OS: Windows 2008 R2 x64
Media Storage: Tapes and DataDomain

When you want to use optimized duplication between two deduplication units, weather its DataDomain or MSDP, you have to open the credentials in the storage server settings, to allow both media servers to access.

The problem that I saw in both MSDP and DataDomain, is that when you try to restore, sometimes the media server chosen is not the local one.
Thats making the restore very slow if the other media server is in another site, through WAN line

For example:

2 Sites:
A. Main
B. DR

2 Media servers:
A. nbmedia-main (at Main site)
B. nbmedia-dr (at DR site)

2 Datadomain appliances:
A. dd670-main (at Main site)
B. dd670-dr (at DR site)

Storage servers credentials are configured to allow access from each storage server to both media servers.
Storage units are configured as "Only use the following media server" with the local media server selected only

Still, when running restore from dr for example, we see that sometimes the media server from main site  is chosen to manage the process:
granted resource MediaID=@aaaaT;DiskVolume=dd670-dr;DiskPool=dd670-dr;Path=dd670-dr;StorageServer=dd670-dr;MediaServer=nbmedia-main

Should have been:
granted resource MediaID=@aaaaT;DiskVolume=dd670-dr;DiskPool=dd670-dr;Path=dd670-dr;StorageServer=dd670-dr;MediaServer=nbmedia-dr

That's causing the restore to run through the WAN line and it's running pretty slow for no reason.

Any idea how can we force the storage server to choose only it's local media server for any backup\restore\duplication action?

In addtion, this could be cuased if you are using 'alternate read server' In the SLP under duplication

When you use "alternate read server " when you restore any of the media servers that have credentials to the storage server will be used. media host override in the master server host properties should force it to use a specific media server or to restore from a specific media server use the bprestore command .

REF : http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH74646 - Using storage life cycle policies the specified media server for the duplication is not used for the restore.

http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH87200 - Restores and duplications from OpenStorage backup need not use the same media server that wrote the backup

Thanks!

I will try it and report how it goes...

Hi

It worked!

I think symantec should recommend these settings when stating storage server credentials.

I always seen kind of issues relate to restore/duplication if credentials are open
