there are two ways to backup catalog database...

1. Hot Backup - Online backup
how to take hot catalog backup - http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/277787.htm

2. Cold Backup - Offline backup
how to take cold catalog backup - refer to the page number 298 of NBU AdminGuideI for UNIX
