Hello Team.

System state backup failing with snapshot error.

Master server OS is Linux and NBU version is 7.1

Client is windows 2003 and NBU version is 7.1

Checked vssadmin list writers and all are stable. Is there a need to install any EEB or any Hot fix.

Please suggest.

Thanks in Advance

First i would suggest you to patch with 7.1.0.4 first if they are not yet....

then require the error details..

detail status of failed job

error log from bpfis and bpbkar  etc.

This indicates a crash of the client - "unexpected termination" and Status 50 ...

Check that there is no anti virus running on the client and also that it has sutiable resources to run the backup (disk space and memory)

I have also seen similar issues when it exhasts its desktop heap (deep Windows memory related) so worth googling that and seeing if it needs increasing

I would look at AV / Access Protection and disk space / memory first as it all does point to a crash on the client - so check its application and system event logs to see if you can pin down what is causing the crash

Hope this helps

Run below command on client to check snapshot status..

vssadmin list providers   (output should be "Provider Type : System")

vssadmin create shadow /for=c: /autoretry=2

if above command fails log a case with wintel team & let them decide about freespace/McAfee/windows patch/client reboot/

Hello Mark.

One more question, u said in your reply that might be there a Antivirus issue but backup of c is completed successfully and only backup of system state is failing..

If there is a antivirus issue then how backup of c:\ completed.

It maybe that the AV software is protecting the system state in some way - McAfee is know to cause all sorts of issues.

It may be a system state issue but your tests look OK initially - but something seems to be crashing NetBackup when it tries to backup the system state

Worth trying the backup with AV and Access protection turned off or at least with all required exclusions set:

Ok - a couple of things to try .. first try the policy using ALL_LOCAL_DRIVES to see what happens - if you don't want D, E etc. then exclude them.

Next check for the latest rollup package for VSS from Microsoft - this may be it:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/940349

See if either of these resolve your issue

One other thing .. it is not an AD controller or similar is it? Are you using a specific account for any of its NetBackup Services?

Did you try ALL_LOCAL_DRIVES?

The rollup package for x64 that i linked to does apply to servers that have SP2 so try applying that one

"Windows Server 2003 for x64-based Systems"

Its done.

Locally mount the system state on C drive and take backup through NT backup , once that NT backups completed , scheduled the netbackuup to backup the c drive.
