TIR Warning Message

NetBackup 6.0 MP5 for Windows

I am in the process of trying to cleanup entries within the problem log.  This forum has been invaluable in helping me populate my exclusion list.  However, there is 1 message I am unable to remove:

"Catalog entry for xxxxxx.xxx indicates it is a TIR entry, but cannot locate a previous backup containing the entry".

I have been unable to find information on how to cleanup this message.  Any suggestions?

I don't know how 6.x handles it, but in previous versions, if there was not a TIR entry for a drive then the incremental would do a full backup of that missing TIR entry for the drive. A lot of work has been done in refining TIR so that has probably been corrected. A lot of NetBackup Admins never check the logs for successfull, status 0, backups because they are too busy trying to keep their head above the water. Whats the problem if the backup was successfull, nothing really except you use the tape drive longer and write more tpes to backup unnecessary files.

I had this with one client in particular.  Did a full backup and the
problem went away for a while, then recurred.

Eventually I decided to try to track it down and contacted the machine
owner for a time to get together and find more information about the
problem.  A few days later I received a humbled call from the owner ...
we was short on disk space and was trying to clean up files he didn't
need.  Since he didn't know these needed to exist, he periodically
erased them, leading to these messages!

He stopped erasing them and the problem disappeared at the next full
backup.  In situations like this, I wish NetBackup would just revert to
a FULL BACKUP, rather than backing up everything in an incremental.  (In
the case related above, we were doing monthly full backups with all
incrementals in between (to save him $$ ... we charge back for amount of
data in our backup server) ... backing up everything every night gave
him quite a surprise at the next billing!).

An alternative is to omit TIR from the backups, but this reduces the
value of the backups and may not be appropriate in your case.

I've also had this happen occasionally with some WinXP laptops, but
haven't figured out why, though it's particularly possible with those
that an incremental was terminated due to the laptop being
unceremonially disconnected from the network.

Hope this helps, wayne

Bob,

I am just trying to understand why this is occuring and if it can be corrected.  The severity level is listed as a "Warning".  I am seeing many of these entries pointing to the NetBackup\DB\Images folder.  It is occuing in others as well, but those entries were removed when I excluded *.tmp files.

For the time being, should I disable TIR and see if this clears things out?  Open to any suggestions.
