Tape and Compatible Client Server Migration To New NBU Master 8.2

Hi Guys,

Gooday! We are planning to migrate the Tape Library and Client Servers from old Master 7.7.3 to new Master Server 8.2.

Here is the Customer Environment:

OLD NBU ENVIRONMENT - 7.7.3

1. MASTER INFORMATION

HOSTNAME: PS13BMASAP

OS: Windows 2008

NBU VERSION: 7.7.3

2. MEDIA INFORMATION

HOSTNAME: PS13BMEDAP
OS: Windows 2008

NBU VERSION: 7.7.3

NEW NBU ENVIRONMENT - 8.2

1. MASTER INFORMATION

HOSTNAME: PS20BMASAP.ho.pbcom.int
OS: Windows 2012

NBU VERSION: 8.2

2. MEDIA INFORMATION

HOSTNAME: PS20BMEDAP.ho.pbcom.int
OS: RHEL/Appliance 5240

NBU VERSION: 8.1.2/ 3.1.2

How we do it without catalog migration and only the Tape and Compatible Cients are needed to migrate?

Assuming that we already create zone, what are the other prerequisite?

There is no way that you should have the same image info on 2 production master servers.

If you want to ahead with 2 separate environments and 2 production master servers, you are looking at a Domain split.

Best to engage with certified partner or Veritas consulting.

We have discussed domain split in these 2 recent discussions:

Hi there,

Assuming zoning is done, you will need to configure the library as per the normal procedure, then import the tapes: https://www.veritas.com/support/en_US/article.100017201

Make sure you have network connectivity between the clients you want to migrate and the new Master/Media servers. Then change the bp.conf/registry on the clients to use the new Master.

Sorry - you can't do that without data loss.

If you zone the new 8.2 environment to the old 7.7.3 environment tape robot, the new 8.2 environment will assume all tapes are empty and can be overwritten.

The catalog contains information about backed-up files, and pointers to where data can be found on tape. Without the catalog you just have a bunch of tapes.

Hi,

I upload here the existing and Plan architecture.

They wont use in 7.7.3 nbu environment after transfer to 8.2 nbu environment the tape library in production but they still want to recover the data from prod tape backup to 8.2.

How the tape backup not overwritten and use for 8.2. backup at the same time.

Hi,

I see this post https://vox.veritas.com/t5/NetBackup/Migrate-tapes-to-new-server/td-p/527018

Can we also use the old tapes for new backup in 8.2?

@jjimenez2

The 2012 post that you found was for pre-7.5 versions.

Recovery without Import can still be done, but it is no longer just a matter of copying images and tapes with images moved to non-backup pools.

As from NBU 7.5, image headers are moved to EMM database. You will need to perform a partial catalog recovery.
Tapes that are Assigned in existing environment need to be moved to a non-backup pool to prevent them from being overwritten.
You can download the whitepaper here: https://www.veritas.com/support/en_US/article.100016138

PS:
I don't understand your diagrams - how are you 'replicating' to DR master in 'EXISTING ENVIRONMENT' with only tape in the environment?

Hi Marianne,

On the existing environment,

We use SLP

Production:

Backup to disk> duplicate to tape

Replicate disk to disk

DR:

Import to DR MSDP disk > duplicate to tape.

@jjimenez2

In your initial post, you have only mentioned tape for existing environment, and Appliance for new environment.
Disk storage is not even reflected anywhere in your diagrams.

What are you plans regarding existing disk/MSDP?

Recovery Without Import is only for tape.

@Marianne  for the production MSDP disk plan is for replication after we transfer from old 7.7.3 to 8.2.

We still retain the old master in prod because there's some client servers are not supported by 8.2 so our plan is to transfer those client servers to new 8.2.

We also want to use the tape in production new 8.2 environment for future backup then at the same time recover those images stored already in tape in 8.2.

I've seen this two option:

1. Catalog recovery but it require same IP and Hostname

2. Recovery without import (not sure of this)
