SAN team completed the zoning.

we could see the drive from OS level.Drive is visible in device manager. But we could see nothing under scan -tape?

Tape drive:IBM LTO5

Netbackup version:7.1

Also plz let me know how to check physical connection between robot (IBM)and server(WINDOWS).

The main things to check are:

Tape library is OK - reboot if neccesary

Zoning is correct

If the HBA is set to use persistent bindings then add the new drive in

I suspect that none of the above is the issue as Windows sees it in device manager - however it may actually be having problems communicating somewhere so check the speed and topology shown by the SAN switch and tape library in case it not using a suitable protocol and also swap the fibre cable from the drive to the SAN switch (it is also worth trying swapping the connectors around in one end of the fibre cable in case it is reversed)

If Windows sees it then NetBackup should see it, at least after a reboot of the media server

Make sure you have suitable tape drivers loaded for the tape drive (preferably the latest from the manufacturer)

When these are installed reboot the server and then try the scan again

delete the Drives from the Device manager and try scan for hardware changes..

then check once..

if you still not able to get the Drives in scan.. update the Drivers for the tape drives form Device managers as suggested by Mark.

As per above excellent posts - download LTO tape drivers from IBM web site.

To check robot connection, best to download the user/installation guide for your make/model library and see how robot must be connected/configured.

Some IBM robots have the robotic arm configured on the same path as the 1st tape drive in the robot.

Please show us a screen shot of your device manager section

Have you re-booted the server? NetBackup will not pick them up until after its first reboot when drives have been added

Have you run the device configuration wizard to see what that detects?

What version of Windows do you have - if not 2008 then make sure that the removable storage service is stopped and disabled as this can block access to the drives

You need to find out what is 'different' about this tape drive.

All we can tell you is that this drive is not responding to the 'scsi inquiry' request sent by scan command.

Are the drives zoned to the same or different hba?

Please check which make is the hba that the tape drive is connected to, then use the hba software to compare settings for this tape drive with the 2 drives that are working to see what is different.

The existing two tape drives are ndmp drives and this window server is acting as ndmp media server.

Now we are planning to use this window server as normal media server(for non filer backups).

Intially the missing tape drive was configured to another aix media server.

The difference is--those are ndmp configured drives.

The drive zoned to different wwpn.

I am not talking about zoning.

Use SanSurfer to check and compare settings.

Symantec's recommendation is to use vendor tape driver.

There is something specific about IBM tape drivers in the HCL. I don't remember the exact details, but you may want to look it up. http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH76495
