Tape drives zoning

spenukon

Hi

I have a question about tape drive zoning. Should the tape drives be zoned to master and media servers or just media servers. We currently configured as below.

Library - Zoned only to master

Tape drives - Zoned to 2 media servers.

We have problems with backup not working. We are using Data domain, and the backup works fine for that. We need to make the ndmp backup work, so we have to have tape drives zoned properly. We have zoned in the filer to see the drives also. Please advice.

Thanks

Sai

Apologies for wasting a lot of time...

Lets get back to basics... You did not provide any info of how configuration from NBU point of view was done...

What is make/model of the filer?
Have you verified that tape drives are visible on the filer? (See NDMP Appliance Info doc.)
License keys for library based tape drives as well as SSO on media servers?
NDMP credentials added to media server to be used as NDMP host?
Device config wizard used to select Master, Media Servers as well as filer when devices were configured?
Have you confirmed that Inventory is up-to-date as per Mark's earlier suggestion?

Please provide output of following commands on the media server that is configured as NDMP host:

vmoprcmd -d

tpconfig -l

Only zone the drives to the server/s that needs them. If that's 1 media server then zone it to that server. It does not need to be zoned to the Master as well (unless you are making the Master work also as a media server and want to share the drives between the servers- you need SSO (shared storage option) license in NetBackup to have drives shared between servers).

Zone the tape drives to all media servers that will write to them

Zone the robotics to one or all of the media servers (but just one is enough)

If the Master only has the robotics zoned but no tapes then its device manager service will not run causing you issues

Hope this helps

Thank you Revaroo for the quick response.

We have NDMP backup issues. I am not even able to label the media. Even though the media is mounted in the drive, the netbackup is spitting errors. Any help with this please. I have rebooted the library, restarted netbackup but nothing works. I can mount the tapes via robtest. That works fine, so it's not hardware related.

Operator denied mount usually indicates that the library itself could be refusing it but it actually says "misplaced tape"

THis indicates that the inventory is not up to date or you have made changes whilst tapes were known to be in the library

Go to the Media section and sort by slot number - highlight all media that has a slot number, right click and select "move" then choose Standalone

Once this is done go back to the library section and run an inventory to update all tapes locations (they may be owned by a robot host that is no longer a robot host)

Hope this helps

Not sure how you are configuring DD to use NDMP backup.
DD does not support 'Direct Copy to Tape'.

Have a look at 'OST Secondary Storage Solutions' section of HCL

You will see that some make/models support Direct_Copy and/or Direct_Copy_Shared,.Not listed for any of the DD models.

Hi Marianne

The NDMP backups are only set to go to tapes not to data domain. I have verified the connectivity to filer and it works fine but the backups are failing with below error. Any help would be greatly appreciated. The shares are there and path name seems to be fine. What else can we check?

If my understanding is correct, your are trying to config duplication from DD to tape using 'NDMP DirectCopy' feature. As per my previous post, this feature is not supported by any of the DD models.

If this is not what you are trying to accomplish, please let us know where NDMP fits into the picture...

Hi Marianne

We just zoned in the tape drives to filer and trying to do a direct NDMP method. It has nothing to do with DD. Our client based backups go to DD.

Thanks

Hi Marianne

I followed the step you mentioned and also inventory the library. The backups are working fine. Thanks all for your help.

Device config wizard used to select Master, Media Servers as well as filer when devices were configured?

Thanks

Glad all is working fine now! yes

It is important to select all components when device config is done - especially in your environment where master server sees robot but no tape drives, and media servers and filer sees drives only and not the robot.

Master is necessary to determine robot control and drive position in the robot.
All media servers must be selected to determine unique serial # and OS address for each tape drive.

Hi Marianne

I have one more question about the direct attached NDMP. Our thoughput seems to be very slow, I wonder if it's going on LAN instead of SAN. So how can we check this.

Does Filer should be zoned to library also for direct attached?

Filer :Sun7410

NEtbackup: 7.5

1 Master and 2 Media servers.

Thanks

Sai

You should have a separate NDMP type storage unit for the filer.
Ensure that this STU is specified in the NDMP policy.

bptm log on the media server that you have selected as NDMP host should give you the info you need.
