Tapes not Expiring

Zak_Meekins_2

Hey Fellas, I have a strange one. I am looking at my media and I see alot of media that has a Time Assigned of 5/30/2008 in the Default pool and an Expiration Date of 08/03/2008. I have many of these tapes that seem to out live their exp. date.

Normally tapes are aged off and go backing to the Default / scratch pool and do not have a time assigned anymore.

Has anyone ever seen this?

Thanks.

Just a snippet out of the meida in Default pool.

Tapes would go back to scratch pool after expiration only if NetBackup has pulled the tape from scratch pool to a particular pool. If tape was manually moved to that particualr pool it remains there even after the expiration.

What command did u use to get the o/p?

I was just looking through the GUI - I have lots of these tapes that seem to outlive their exp date. If I try and querry the tapes I get errors saying that the media in not listed in the EMM database.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

I'm not sure if this will help, but I expiry encountered problems when testing multiplexing that tapes would become frozen mpx.

I had to expirate the tapes using the bpexpdate command:

Example:  bpexpdate-m [mediaID] -d [date] (i just used 0 to expire completely)

Then I could erase the tapes.

Status of the tapes? FROZEN? SUSPENDED?

Have the tapes passed their expiry date? (Volume expiry NOT image expiry - can be set so tapes 'physically' expire after, say, two years)

Hey Fellas, thanks for all the responses. These tapes are not suspended or frozen they simply were not aged off. It is very puzzling. I have opened a case with symantec and they are going to have me run some database consistency checks with a tool outlined in this document:

http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/306883.htm

This will aparently tell me what media have been affected and them I will have to expire them manually.

I will update the thread as to what happens.

Thanks.

Hey, this is weird, I can not even expire them with bpexpdate:

[root@bl-backup-01a tmp]# /usr/openv/netbackup/bin/admincmd/bpexpdate -m B1106R -d 0 -justmedia
yAre you SURE you want to delete B1106R y/n (n)?
database system error

Any Ideas?

thanks.

If you run bpimmedia for that tape does it return anything?  Also, did you improperly decommission a media server?

Hey, I did not improperly remove a media server. This is what I think happened so far, I replaced a NetApp filer head, the new head was named the same thing and put back into the NDMP backup rotation. There could have been some hardware thing somewhere that made netbackup think that this is a completely different box.

It backed up just fine and all was good, then I noticed that media that were not expiring. All of the media that were not expiring were all media that were used by the filer prior to the head being replaced.

The engineers at symantec said that this may or may not have been the issue but they gave me some database scripts that ture up the image database with the emm database and now I can expire the meida. There is actually a known bug in 6.5.1 with NDMP backups that span multiple tapes not expiring correctly so I will be applying a binary tomorrow once they give it to me.

They said this bug is not corrected in 6.5.2 but it will be addressed in 6.5.3.

Thanks.
