To virtualise or not to virtualise

Hi,

I am after a general opinion. Is running your Master server on VMware supported? We have a Master server running Windows server 2003 R2 x86. We have a 90GB catalog, and the master server is not used as a VMware backup host or alternate read server. I am planning to upgrade the master to Windows server 2008.

WMware is running vsphere 5.5 and I can supply plenty of processors and RAM.

In terms of performance,I have a feeling the master server will run fine on the virtual server infrastructure, unless anyone can tell me otherwise? Also what are the negatives of running a VM master server? e.g it is unwise to host your master on an environment you may need to recover using netbackup from scratch.

Regards

Carl

hi,

Master server can run fine on the VM , but it do have some limitations.. refer the below doc for the details..

http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH127089

Virtual master server
The NetBackup master server is supported within a virtual machine, under the
limitations described in the “General guidelines for support.”
Refer to the following NetBackup Operating System compatibility document for a
list of supported NetBackup 7.x master server platforms:
