Unable to browse SQL databases on the client

Leo461

Hi Guys,

I was wondering if any of you can maybe assist me with setting up this first time backup for this server.

I am unable to browse the SQL DB's for this server when trying to setup a legacy backup (batch file)

When registering the instance on the Netbackup server it works but when kicking of the backup we get a backupf failure with status 2. "1: (2) none of the requested files were backed up "

Netbackup Environment 8.1

SQl Client:

Server 2008 R2 Enterprise

SQL Server 2012

Error message: Application connection failed for *servername* when browsing on the client using Netbackup MS SQL client.

When the backup is kicked off using an Intelligent policy We picked up an error “ODBC connection setup failed” in the backup job details which fails and also in the logs on the client.

Troubleshooting thus far.

  • Ensured sysadmin access within the SQL studio for the srvstorbck acc. And NT\Authority.
  • Restarted Netbackup services.
  • Tested backups for Intelligent and batch file (legacy) backups
  • Tried authenticating through the Netbackup MS SQL client tool on the client – Unable to browse DB’s
  • Setup logs for troubleshooting (picked up error ODBC connection setup failed)
  • Updated host file on the client to reflect short name, FQDN and IP’s as well as on the backup server
  • Reinstalled netbackup client.
  • Checked DNS and ping to andfrom client
  • Ran netbackup services using the srvstorbck account.

Thanks

@Leo461

Could you please share level 3 dbclient log file (upload as .txt)?

It will be fine if you replace all host and database names with generic names, e.g. master, media1, client1, etc.

Which services did you change to use as srvstorbck and is srvstorbck a local admin on the box?

can we assume connectivity is fine with master / media  & client server ??

are  you able to perform file level backups?

Hi Marianne,

Appologies for the delay in feedback, been running around like a headless chicken.

Please find the attached dbclient log as requested.

Thanks

@Leo461

I will download the log file on my laptop when time permits.

I assist mostly in my own time using my mobile phone.
I can ONLY open files with .txt extensions on my phone.

@Leo461

I had a look at the log file.

This is the 1st error that 'jumps out':

09:28:04.725 [14812.21964] <16> CGlobalInformation::QuerySQLServerInfo: ERR - Error in RegConnectRegistry, opening <HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE> key on <\\>: 1707. The text follows:

Google found this TN: https://www.veritas.com/support/en_US/article.100016336

Extract:
The above errors indicate that NetBackup has issues connecting to the registry information.
Check the Windows Remote Registry Service and make sure it is installed and running on the SQL Server.

Thanks Marianne,

I had a look at the Service and I see its installed and started. I gave it a restart for good measure.

I still get the error unfortunately. I have asked the SQL admin to check the ODBC driver on this box as I also see this error

repeated in the logs. I will feedback to the forum if I find anything. thanks for the assistance thus far.

Regards

It seems like a permission related issue.

Going further down the log, we see this :

Is UAC enabled?
Are you starting the NBU for SQL GUI with 'run as Admin'?

Something else that may seem silly but worth checking - can you verify that all parameters in NBU MS-SQL connection properties are correct?

I have just opened the GUI on my laptop (no SQL installed - just wanted to check the fields).
It opens with totally WEIRD entries - hostname has nothing to do with my laptop name and I have no idea where the instance name comes from! (I have nothing to do with Veeam!)
Please see the attached screenshot.
The errors/messages seen in your log makes me wonder if the correct host is selected?
Other than that - permission or UAC issue?

Hi Marianne,

UAC is not enabled. I run Netbackup MS SQL client as admin yes and also the hostname selected is the correct name.

Im also an administrator on this box. I also tried the FQDN, ive tried playing around with it but the error pops up immediatey.

This is a tough one I just cant seem to find the issue.
