Solved: Understanding of SG BUILD

Dear Forum,

I am facing problem with tape drive visibility on netbackup.

Total 8 drive should be visible but only 7 is getting detected on nbu.

On OS and OBP level i m getting it but not in netbackup.

I have tried rebuilding sg, rebooting media server etc.but no luck.

MY ? is : Need to understand -mt & -ml while giving for sg.build

Can you pls. explain or any good doc on this to understand it.

If we look at your steps and the steps that I have posted over here, you will agree that if you followed the steps in my post exactly, it would've worked, right?

Your steps:

in some cases the Target can be a WWN

the value between the comma and the : is the Lun
... not necessary to convert Target value if it's a WWN

We already new this from /dev/rmt listing in your 2nd post.
I have therefore not listed -mt and -mt options.

3) go to driver directory

a) cd /usr/openv/volmgr/bin/driver

i) all your commands will be run FROM THIS DIRECTORY

Exactly as per my steps:

# cd /usr/openv/volmgr/bin/driver

If steps are run from ANY other folder, the sg.links and sg.conf file is created in the wrong place and sg.install will not use the newly created templates. Older and probably incorrect files in driver folder will still be used.

4) if Target is a WWN

a) run the command ../sg.build all (make sure to include the two leading periods)

My step:
# /usr/openv/volmgr/bin/sg.build all

There is no need for leading dots if the full path is specified.

We new target is wwn from your /dev/rmt listing.
I have therefore not listed -mt and -mt options.

6) remove old sg.conf file

a) rm /kernel/drv/sg.conf

7) install new driver configuration files

a) ./sg.install (make sure to include the single leading period)

8) verify correct sg operation by running scan

a) /usr/openv/volmgr/bin/scan

My steps:

Install the new sg driver configuration:

# /usr/bin/rm -f /kernel/drv/sg.conf
# /usr/openv/volmgr/bin/driver/sg.install

Check/verify config:

# /usr/openv/volmgr/bin/sgscan

So... you will agree that your steps is just a longer version of mine, right?

I always have my steps in a text file and simply copy & paste.
Especially when target is wwn.

How are your drives attached _ FC or SCSI

If FC (most likely) you don't use mt or ml

PLease post up ls -al /dev/rmt

These steps have always worked for me:

# cd /usr/openv/volmgr/bin/driver
# /usr/openv/volmgr/bin/sg.build all

Install the new sg driver configuration:

# /usr/bin/rm -f /kernel/drv/sg.conf
# /usr/openv/volmgr/bin/driver/sg.install

Check/verify config:

# /usr/openv/volmgr/bin/sgscan

PS:

Is this Solaris Sparc or x86?

If x86, disable MPxIO:

Change this line to 'yes' in /kernel/drv/fp.conf

mpxio-disable="yes"

Hi Marianne,

It is a Solaris Sparc and having 11.1 OS on it.

It's a Sun LDOM (guest domain) virtual machine.

I tried the steps given by you. But its showing same 7 drives...

do i have to take a reconfig reboot.

Which drive is NOT seen by NBU?

Check and confirm that drive is accessible and usable at OS level.
The problem with loss of connectivity at OS level is that device entries are not automatically cleaned up.

Test the 'missing' drive as follows:

mt -f /dev/rmt/<number> status

To cleanup device entries at OS level, run this command (no reconfiguration boot needed):

devfsadm -C -c tape

As checked by the OS/Hardware vendor...the HBA card/ports etc are working fine and everything online.

They informed on the OS level they can see the drives...

Can u let me know the command so that i can check on the OS level as well the drives.

In no particular order

cfgadm -al

get a junk tape , write prot it and move it from one drive thro to the last drive and check you can control it correctly via mt command eg mt -f /dev/rmt/0cbn status / mt -f /dev/rmt/0cbn rewoffl as suggested above.

If you have fibre you can use

luxadm inq /dev/rmt/0cbn

for all drives

fcinfo hba-port

etc

Sometime cfgadm -al does not show everything.

Also try

cfgadm -al -o show_FCP_dev

As per my previous post - compare sgscan output with list of tapes seen in /dev/rmt:

# cd /dev/rmt
# ls -l *cbn

# /usr/openv/volmgr/bin/sgscan

Check which one is not seen by sgscan, then issue this command:

# mt -f /dev/rmt/<number> status

Show us output.

Thanks for the output.

We can see that we are missing sg driver info for /dev/rmt/6 - wwn 500104f000b16312.

We see all in sg.links and sg.conf 1 target for each wwn and 17 luns (0-16), except for this wwn.

What were the parameters that you used for sg.build? (-mt and -ml)

We can edit the sg.links and sg.conf files and manually add entries for wwn 500104f000b16312, but I would like to first see the existing entries cleaned up, as there is no need for 17 luns for each entry.
I have no explanation of why entries were not added for 500104f000b16312....

In the steps that I have posted above, you will see that there is no need for -ml and -mt.

Please run these steps again:

# cd /usr/openv/volmgr/bin/driver
# /usr/openv/volmgr/bin/sg.build all

Now check newly created sg.links and sg.conf files in the current directory (/usr/openv/volmgr/bin/driver)

Do you see an entry for 500104f000b16312?

If so, go ahead with sg.install.

If not, copy and paste the entries for 500104f000b16315, edit to make it 500104f000b16312.
Do it for both files (sg.links and sg.conf).
Now go ahead with sg.install:

Install the new sg driver configuration:

# /usr/bin/rm -f /kernel/drv/sg.conf
# /usr/openv/volmgr/bin/driver/sg.install

Check config once again with:
/usr/openv/volmgr/bin/sgscan
/usr/openv/volmgr/bin/scan
