Upgrading Netbackup from 7.0 (Windows 2003) to 7.7 (Windows 2008)

Hi,

I am planning for a upgrade from Netbackup 7.0 (Windows 2003) to 7.7 (Windows 2008 or Windows 2012).

All media Servers and Clients are also running on Netbackup 7.0

Please let me know the procedure for upgradation and below queries.

I am aware of same hostname and IP address between two servers.

Need to know whether i can install Netbackup 7.7 on Windows 2008 and restore the Catalog backup from Netbackup 7.0 running on Windows 2003 directly ??

Or I have to install Netbackup 7.0 or any other version on Windows 2008 and then import catalog ,then upgrade to Netbackup 7.7

Also while upgrading ,Do i need to upgrade version by version like 7.0 -->7.1
-->7.5-->7.6-->7.7 ?? or Upgrade directly to Netbackup 7.7 form 7.0 ??

After upgrading to Netbackup 7.7 , Do we need upgrade media server immediatly to backup catalog ?? or we can use media server with old version and still backup all clients including Catalog ??

Note :

No MSDP

NO Oracle Agent

No Opscenter

Target Storage - EMC Data Domain

Clients - Only File system backups and some SQL agent clients

With Regards,

Vicky

Please refer to Veritas SORT about upgrade paths. https://sort.veritas.com/checklist/install If you have any question after going through SORT please let us know.

You would have to recover the catalog as 7.0 then upgrade to 7.7.

Once the master server is on 7.7, you should follow up and upgrade all media servers to 7.7.

These are two mini projects:

(1) Hardware refresh - Upgrade you OS to Win2008/2012 : Here you will have to recover the catalog to the new hardware. Please plan this very carefully and execute it by following all the reference in VOX and SORT documentation

(2) Upgrade to 7.7 : This will be relatively simple and straight forward upgrade once you are done with hardware refresh. You can follow the SORT and steps given in one of the vox solution - https://vox.veritas.com/t5/NetBackup/Upgrade-from-7-7-2-to-7-7-3/m-p/827668#M225034

Thank you for your reply.

I came across a blog that Upgrade should be done version by version...like first 7.0 and restore catalog...then upgrade to 7.1 --> 7.5-->7.6-->7.7....Please clear my doubt on this...

No. There is no need to upgrade to each intermediate version.

See this:

NetBackup 7.7.3

To obtain NetBackup 7.7.3 installation media:
 http://www.veritas.com/docs/000108154
Extract:
The NetBackup 7.7.3 GA Release is a full media release for upgrades from any NetBackup 7.x version.

Confirmed in 7.x Upgrade Portal:  http://www.veritas.com/docs/000040130

About migrating to new hardware (W2008):

Using catalog backup and recovery to transfer NetBackup catalogs between Windows master servers as part of a hardware refresh
http://www.veritas.com/docs/000041076

W2012 is only supported as from NBU 7.6.
Once the W2008 server is on 7.7.3, you can again use catalog backup and restore to migrate/upgrade to new OS.

Hi,

I am planning to upgrade from Netbackup  7.0 (Windows 2003) to 7.7.3 (windows 2012 ) now

As 7.0 doesnt support Windows 2012 ,i am upgrading the current hardware from Netbackup 7.0 to 7.6.0.3 and then restore catalog to Windows 2012 server (installed Netbackup 7.6.0.3),the upgrading to 7.7.3

How we can upgrade from 7.0 to 7.6.0.3 ,can we do it directly or we have move from 7.0 -->7.5-->7.6-->7.6.0.3 on windows 2003 server??

I hope we can upgrade from 7.6.0.3 to 7.7.3 driectly ??

Also We are using EMC data domain as storage device, will it have any impact on upgradation ??

with Regards,

Vicky

This is the problem with waiting so long to upgrade.

Although NBU can be directly upgraded from 7.0 to 7.7.3, OS compatibility is the problem here.

The only OS that is supported for a direct upgrade is W2008 x64.

You will need W2008 as an intermediate step.

You can find OS compatibility across NBU versions here:

Operating System (CL) :
NBU 7.0 - 7.6 OS SCL: http://www.veritas.com/docs/000040842
NBU 7.7 OS SCL: http://www.veritas.com/docs/000025229

You will see that W2003 32-bit is only supported up to NBU 7.5.
W2012 is only supported as from NBU 7.6.

So, my previous advice still stands:

1. Migrate to W2008 using same 7.0 version and patch level.
2. Upgrade W2008 server to 7.7.3.
3. Migrate/upgrade to W2012.

Hi,

We are using Windows server 2003 R2 64 - bit OS as current master server .I hope we can migrate to 7.6.0.3 from 7.0 and the migrate the catalog to Windows 2012 server ,then to 7.7.3

Do Netbackup 7.6.0.3 version can be migrated from 7.0 directly or have to move from 7.6 ??

With Regards,

Vicky

You can upgrade the current master that is running Windows Server 2003 R2 directly to 7.6.0.3 from 7.0. Once that upgrade is finished, you can then migrate to the Windows Server 2012 server and upgrade to 7.7.3.

@GeForce123 is 100% correct.

I somehow missed the fact that the current master server is 64-bit.

You can upgrade directly to any 7.6.x.x version on the current server.

Please download the software ASAP (if you have not done so already) - all versions up to NBU 7.6.1.x reached EOSL in Feb 2017.
No idea how much longer 7.6 versions will still be available on MyVeritas site...
