VADP Backups with NBD transport type

Hi,

I need answer for my doubt, which i had while discussing the topic with my friend.

Q: Is there major difference in backup process or work flow if we use NBD instead of SAN as transport type in vmware policy ?

Also, i need to submit the test case for both and for which I believe there should not be in any difference in both test cases (backups and restore).

Test case for SAN is mentioned below:

Statement of Purpose:
This test is to ensure that in case of single file recovery or entire VM failed recovery. In case of disaster, how we would be able to recover the entire Virtual server (.vmdk), which would be mounted back to vCenter server & readily available to use.

Method:
Through Netbackup console

Pre-requisite(s):
1. VMWARE (ESXi) to be installed & configured
2. Netbackup needs to be installed and configured.

Test Data:
20-50GB

Backup Process:

1. Create a policy with the type as VMware and provide all other required attributes
2. Go to clients tab and browse the Virtual machine through vCenter server configured in netbackup master server.
3. Add the VM and run the policy manually.

Result: Backup of Virtual machine via VADP off-host backup method should be successful

Restore Process:

1. For testing the restore of VM, go to BAR console on master server and click on restore files
2. Provide source & destination client name and policy type as VMware
3. It will display the vmdk files of the selected VM and select the same and restore to same/alternate location.

Result: Restore of individual file/entire virtual machine should be successful.

Now the test case for NBD should be same, as per my assumptions. Please let me know, if it would be different, and if so, what would be the difference.

there is a difference in the way you configure it for both SAN and NBD

and there is a difference in the way they communicate or transfer the data  for both SAN and NBD

and also there is different selections (few) selection that you need to make restore via SAN or backups...

please have a look on below

Manish:

The following documentation provides an indepth discussion of the different transport modes for VMware backups and useful tips for troubleshooting.

http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH183072

Also, I notice in your test case you do not mention creating a schedule for the policy. You must create a test schedule for a manual backup to work. The policy creation wizard can be very helpful for creating new policies.

Thanks Ram and Jmontagu. I am actually looking for difference on netbackup side, if we configure vadp backup with san or with nbd.

I mean, on NBU side, backup will be configured in same manner for NBD (policy creation with vip, just choosing the transport type as NBD instead of SAN) and running the backup.

There will be not any difference seen in backups and restore with this transport type (restoring in same manner through BAR)

Background process are much clear to me about data travels and load.

yes.. from the frount end .. there is not much difference other than selecting the NDB or SAN option ..
