VCB Backups are Frequently hanging

Hi,

We are using VCB to backup VM's and they are frequently hanging andn I could not find why it is happening.

Setup is

Master Server Win 2008 NBU 6.5.6

Media Server Win 2008 NBU 6.5.6  it is backup Proxy also and VCB is installed here version is 1.5

vSphere/ESX 4.0 and we are using HP EVA4400 SAN

Problem is backup frequently hang after taking snapshot and mounting on Backup server but after that nothing happens

bpfis log simply says vcb command execution is successful and after that it simply send keep alive messages and I cannot find vcb logs I think ideally they should log at %SYSTEM%\Temp directory but nothing is there and I check user through which it is running and it has some logs in user directory appdat temp folder and it do not say much it simmply says

Also I do not find it's log directory path in any of it's config file, I was able to find logging level and I increased it to 6.

I can see VM filers are mounted on backup Proxy server but nothing happens after that.

To resolve it I recycled Netbackup services and also killed all vcbmounter and vmout2 processes on proxy server they run well for couple of days but again they hang. I currently do not have visisbilty after mounting Vm snapshot why it is not starting backup.

In one of the discussions I saw people has similar issue and they kill vcbmounter and vmount2 process if it hangs for 15 mins or  so.

Any idea how can we resolve this also what are the best practises for VCB backups?

I know it is out of support and not in use but any help is appreciated as we may not go for upgrade soon.

Thanks,

Abu Hamzah

You REALLY need to upgrade.

Not only did NBU 6.x run out of support in 2012, NBU 7 introduced vSphere backups that renders VCB backups obsolete.
VMware will also not support VCB much longer and strongly recommends that you transition away from VCBhttp://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=102694...

Each new minor version (dot-release) since NBU 7.0 has introduced significant improvements to VMware backups.

Have a look at NBU 7.x version comparison matrix:
