hi

we are using netbackup 7.1 on a Unix Master  server,in the setup we have a Windows media server(win 2k3) which is a VM backup Host, recently we created a VM policy for  50  Virtual machines,  backups are runnign fine for all the VM's except one Vm is failing with errror code 6 and with the message "

Error opening the snapshot disks using given transport mode: Status 23"

we have VM backup host version as 7.1.0.1
we have set the options in the policy : Transfer type-- NBD.SAN.Try all types.
:  Backup type: Full mapped VM, Full VM backup

Please suggest us on the issue and do the needful.

Either the LUN that client is on is not visible by the VMWare Backup Host, it is on a LUN that is local to the ESX Server rather than SAN Based, or that machine is a template rather than a normal client (templates cannot be backed up via the SAN)

Hope this helps

The bpfis log from the VMWare Backup Host may give us more detail

The LUN is visible to backup host, also we have other machine thats configured for the same Data store and the backups are writing fine, also when i start a backup i am able to see that snapshot is getting created at ESX console and after the backups failure it is getting deleted...please advise..

Is the client definately not a template?

Need to see the bpfis and bpbkar logs from the VMBackup Host

Hi, you say "I can see that snapshot is getting created at ESX console" ... did the snapshot complete  (or not before being removed?

Is it possible that one vmdk for this VM is configured as independant?

I have also in mind that if a VM has many vmdks located on various datastores, the snapshot is getting created on the datastore holding vmx definition file.  This said, could you confirm that you are able to manually create a snapshot for this VM from vSphere GUI console?

Regards
