Have you checked bpfis log yet?

Level 5 log should not be necessary unless you have logged a Support call with Veritas/Symantec.
Level 3 is fine for 'user level' troubleshooting.

Please confirm that Client OS selected in the Policy is Windows2008, NOT WindowsXP or Vista.

To get back to your original question:
VSS is mandatory for WOFB on W2008 client.

There are various snapshot options in Master Server -> Client Attributes -> Add/select client name -> Windows Open File Backup tab

You may want to read up about these options in NBU Admin Guide I.

See this TN as well:

How to verify Windows Open File Backup operation using VSSADMIN and BPFIS before contacting Symantec Technical Support

please give complete details. VSS is required for snapshot based backups. In windows 2000 only NBU uses its own snapshot VSP.

You need some sort of snapshot technology in order to take snapshot backups.
VSS will be the default if you have not selected a particular snapshot provider that is available on the client.

You may want to read up in NetBackup Snapshot Client Administrator's Guide  -
See Automatic snapshot selection in Chapter 3 of this manual.

The default option is auto. This means that NBU will look at available snapshot technologies availalable on the client.

NetBackup uses the first suitable method found.

To see how NBU checks for snapshot software and what happens at the end of the backup, you will need bpfis log folder on the client.

"HW/OS/Client: Windows-x64 WindowsXP " Windows XP ? For real? Support for this OS has been dropped and also does not have VSS built in. Open file/ snapshot backup for XP is not supported.

Why do you have Client type in policy PC-x64, WindowsVista when it is Windows2008 ?

And what exactly is the issue with VSS when the backup is successful?

Sagar_Kolhe
Level 6

Once backup completes. snapshot is getting generated in system volume information folder. when we checked in VSSadmin command , its related to backup , so it consumes the space on the server.

Its bpgetconfig output , in policy we have 2008 x64.

This is windows 2008 R2 server.

Where is this coming from? PC-x64, WindowsVista (And reference to XP in your previous post ?) And do you have bpfis log on client to troubleshoot snapshot removal? Any errors in Event Viewer logs?

Sagar_Kolhe

output is coming from bpgetconfig command. There is no error in event log, I have created the log with V=5. I will share soon.
