Verify hot catalog backup

HI,

Is there a way to verify that the catalog backup(backup to disk) are successful and the backup files are consistent?

Is there a way to simulate catalog import?

Thanks

Danny

My first though would be the Verify option in the Catalog Section - nice and easy

You can also go into the BAR GUI and select the policy type NBU-Catalog with Master as source and destination and then just restore the files to an alternate location

Of course if you are that worried about the catalog backups what about the rest of your backups?

I would have thought a verify and maybe a few files restored to an alternate location would have been enough - only the full DR test really proves it as only that way does it do the database manipulation parts of the restore etc.

Hope this helps

I suppose you are in effect answering your first question with the second. Similar to how do you know your backups are good - perform a restore. Of course you dont want to restore your catalog if you dont need to.

But there is the Verify option under Catalog in the GUI. (see screenshot image below)

OR alternatively really go the whole hog. If your master is a Windows or Linux OS. Create a temporary VM using any free hypervisor out there or VMware Workstation for example.

Install into that the OS of your master and install the NBU binaries and patch level to match your master.

Disconnect or have this VM off your production network.

Then copy your catalog files into that VMGuest OS in the same location.

And run the catalog recovery.

That way you have learnt how to recover NetBackup catalog and a lot more.

Delete the VM.

Obviously there are a whole lot of steps missing here but you can find a lot more in the Catalog Recovery procedures and documentation on symantec.com site.
